Log Book question "Total Mileage Today"
#1
The Driver's Daily Log my company uses has the following blanks: "Total Miles Driving Today" and "Total Mileage Today".
My question is this: what should be entered in the "Total Mileage Today" blank? My trainer when I was a truck driver said that "Total Miles Driving Today" was where I would enter how many miles I drove the tractor-trailer. And "Total Mileage Today" was to be either the total of all miles driven today (his miles and my miles) OR if I was the only driver, then Total Mileage Today was my total miles driven for that day. We have a driver who writes the truck odometer reading in "Total Mileage Today", just one driver out of many does this thing. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Your trainer was correct. This is for when driving in a team situation only. When driving solo just leave it blank, or better yet cross it out and initial the cross out so that it doesn't somehow get "changed" later.

I just checked some old J.J. Keller books I have. That line isn't even available. Per the regs... there is no requirement for "total mileage today." Only for "total miles DRIVEN today." So.... I guess this is a company policy thing. I don't think the DOT officers can write a violation for not filling in a line that is not required by a reg. (they HAVE to specify the reg that is violated.)

I've been running the eclipse log book (highly recommend by the way) when I enter my miles it shows up on the line as for where am and what I'm doing.

At one time I used to put the beginning and ending odometer reading in the mileage box. I would then put the total miles driven in the other box. Now I only put in the total miles driven for the day. I have had several inspections doing it this way and none have said anything about it.
