3 DUI over 15 years old - trouble for inexperienced driver?
I am considering a new career in trucking, but seem to have run into a snag. I have DUI's in MN... '83, '84, and '92. I am being told by a few large companies that they won't touch hiring me out of school, despite the fact that these offenses are 15 years old and I have been sober during this time. One company said I might be considered after one year experience with a smaller company who might be more inclined to hire someone in my situation, but still no guarantee.
I am curious if anyone has any feedback for me as I am very interested, and serious, about becoming a truck driver. Do you know if it's possible to have such offenses removed from your driving record? Maybe you have a recommendation about which companies are more apt to consider my situation?
I am very frustrated because I have been excited about getting started down a new road, but now I kinda seem to have major engine trouble! I have yet to make arrangements for school, and I am not going to do that, obviously, if I am wasting my time and money.
Any advise and response is appreciated.

You are going to have trouble with MOST major and non-major companies. Most companies will accept 1 DUI as long as it's 5 or 7 years old, but usually more than 1 is going to be a permanent bar on you.
The thought process is if you didn't learn once, why would someone think you learned after 2 or 3? Right or wrong, that's the way it is. If someone hires you and God forbid, you have a relapse and get drunk and in an accident, that company might as well just hand the victims a blank check and the ownership papers. No company out there is going to be willing to gamble on a multi-DUI driver, regardless of how long ago it was.

Yeah, I can understand where you are coming from. I am just very disappointed that I have learned this now, after getting all excited about the prospect of a new job in trucking. Thanks for your reply TF.

The industry is under an ever-strengthening microscope these days. Companies are getting tighter and tighter on their qualifications.

Its the companys insurance that are very tight ,I think being sober all these years should be concidered but in our sue happy society companys cant take a chance because if you had a accident even though it wasnt your falt a lawyer would use those 3 dui s against you and you company.

You can have a clean MVR, no DUIs, and no criminal past and still be an idiot :P

you may not be able to get a OTR job. Try your local dump truck outfits. I know i drive a dump truck now. They didnt even run my driving record. Most likely you make more then OTR anyway uinless you live in the sticks where dump drivers get 9/hr

Re: 3 DUI over 15 years old - trouble for inexperienced driv
They only run the DMV for 5, or 10 years. I would recommend not disclosing it. FWIW, you are better off working at a small company. Screw the large companies, you will just be meat in the seat.
