I have slept there a number of times, at the Petro and the Flying J. I never had a problem. There are always a lot of people around. As long as you stay aware of your surrounding, as yoopr suggested, you should not have a problem.

I'm at the Petro and it's ok. it's an extra large lot but we are packed in here. It's in the 80's and hot. I pretty much got the rest of my hair cut off here at the barber shop. There are 2 policeman here 24 hours a day and they are really really tall and BIG. Not fat, very muscular.
The guy that takes you across the border is called The Cadillac Man. You don't need a passport to get back in. I don't think that takes effect for some time yet. El Paso seems like the place were you live if your not rich I'll tell you that. Pulled off at a place that said scenic view and there's this huge pile of garbage. Dropping my load off at 7:30 tomorrow then back here to Petro then off to Mexico for a bit unless I get a call to go someplace in a hurry then that will take priority first. |
You have some people who make a lot of money in and around El Paso, on both sides of the border. You just probably won't see it from your present vantage point. There is a tremendous amount of growth in the area. The majority of people are not going to be in that group, but it is a typical border town with a unique history. If you have some prescriptions that need filled, you can save a lot of money by going across the border and having them filled. I met a girl there several years ago who told me that her grandmother goes across to fill a prescription that costs about $8 in Mexico, but would cost about $70 in the U.S.

Showed up at the customer site this morning around 4am and figured I would sit there and read the forum and stuff. All of a sudden my smoke detector starts yelling FIRE, FIRE, FIRE. Next thing the whole cab is filled with smoke. That little ceramic space heater I bought was ready to go up in flames. So that goes out the window and no problem.
This place is smack in the middle of what looks like the aftermath of a nuclear attack. Railroad tracks with bums living in cardboard houses. Cars going up and down the street with tinted windows so dark you can't see in and they are all going 1 mph. The same cars going around. People in the alley ways. Now I got my thumper in one hand and my mace in the other thinking I should go park back someplace safe and come back later. Next the cops are driving around and everyone disappears so I stay. The people show up early and are real nice and I get unloaded. A bunch of old timer Mexicans. I tell them I'm heading across the border for some cute Senorita later on and they get a laugh. So all unloaded and back to the truckstop and the phone rings. Got a load of copper going back to Norwich CT which is 2 hours from home. Cool, I'll head back home, do a few things then head out again. I'm getting all my wheels polished, 2 150 gal tanks and my air cleaner polished for $50 right now. They need it bad. I wanted someone else to do this to give me a head start then I'll start doing them myself with some polish a guy on this forum sent me. I'm going to head over to Mexico for the rest of the day and check it out with the Cadillac Man Tour thing. I think he's just a guy with a car that brings you and drops you off but I'm sure he knows all the places to go to and to stay out of. Just had my nap so I'M GOOD TO GO....WATCH OUT ZORRO, LOCK UP YOUR LADIES!!!! |
Ahhh memories of the border towns.....I wonder if they still sell Chicolets gum there...only place I used to see it was Mexico. Oh...and the donkeys painted with black stripes to make them look like zebras....what was with that?
Steve...too bad you can't buy some of the "good" tequila down there to take home. I assume the risk would be too high in a random DOT inspection and them finding it (even unopened) on your truck... |

What were you using to power the heater? |

How many of you have fire and CO detectors in your trucks???? So much for my load of copper. I guess the whole load was not good enough for anode grade quality so all the loads for the week are gone, maybe. |
