Well, I had a nice 2 days off in lovely Casper Wyoming at the Sinclair. Not a bad place. The shower rooms are so big that if Flying J buys the place they can make 4 out of each one!
I dead headed to Cheyenne this morning about 180 miles to pick up some machinery going to Oklahomo that needs to be delivered tomorrow and is about 780 miles. I'm getting $2.00 a mile for that and I have another load being picked up tomorrow after I unload going to Colorado for a little over $2.00 a mile. The load going to Colorado is hot and they would like it Sunday so I'll see what I can do. I'm at the Pilot which is right outside the entrance to the oil refinery where I pick up. From what I hear it's a mad house with lots of trucks coming and going. Not sure what I'm hauling. I turned down a load of cow hides yesterday heading for Boston. I guess it's a pretty smelly load. I use to play paint ball near the place where they process the hides and sometimes it would make you puke so no thanks. I kept getting call after call from a different person at the same broker house wanting me to haul something from Oklahoma. All the loads were less than $1.10 per mile and that was even for the loads that were going less than 300 miles. I told them to stop calling me and to take me off there list. I told them they should be ashamed at trying to make as much as possible at the expense of the truck driver and also told them I'm sure the customer is paying a hell of a lot more than what your offering. I could tell she wasn't a big fan of calling and offering these rates. Time for some Coke and Yodels. I'm on the junk food diet. Not sure it's working though. |
I am glad that you are getting better rates. I am amazed at some of these brokers could actually bring themselves to offer $1.10/mile.

So overall your dealings with brokers has been pretty good?
I'd love to do what you do. Problem is I'm canadian and I can't touch 95% of freight. Other problem is that there is NOTHING coming out of where I'm from. All the local companies have everything tied up. |
Yup, my dealings with brokers has been excellent except for Total Quality Logistics who called me every 1/2 hour. I already got paid so I'm hoping they call me again for a load so I can have some fun.
Time for you to move across the border Allan? We have Canadian bacon and Molson here so you should be all set. |
Ya know, sometimes it pays to trust your gut instincts. The load I have after I deliver this one is palatalized rocks. I called the customer up for directions and the lady told me right off the bat this was a heavy load. She said it's over 48,000 pounds. I said WHAT??? I called the broker and he said she's always wrong and it's not a problem.
Well, they load up until 4:30pm on Friday and I'll be showing up close to that time and it wouldn't give me any time to scale and get back if it's too heavy so I said forget it. Now everyone is pissed except me!!! I checked the load boards and there are 903 flatbed loads within 100 miles of where I drop off so I'm guessing there won't be a problem getting another load....YA THINK? |
I would post about my travels today but I've been busy writing a letter to the Judge for Paris Hilton. I have offered my truck as house arrest. I'll keep you posted. I'm pretty sure they will go for it.
