Default San Fran to Minneapolis Route?

I'm driving from San Francisco to Minneapolis next week for the first time. What's the easiest route across the mountains? I have time and ability to take a longer route if possible. How much harder is it to go through Great Falls, MT? I've got family that would be fun to see. I see it's only 140 miles longer but time wise because of the passes?

I would highly recommend you look at your routes again.

I80 to I90 will be considerably less than 140 miles. And that's over 40 gallons of fuel. Make a habit of that without prior approval, good way to get fired.

I am not on the computer to plot the route I'd take, but Wyoming you can really cut some major miles off the route. The biggy is taking us85 between Casper wy and hot springs sd

I'm not worried about time or mileage or fuel. I was just wondering about the mountain passes going up through Idaho. Is it a major pain worth the couple extra hour drive?

Which pass? Unless you are getting off the big roads. I'd be more concerned about if you are taking the 2 lanes, you'll need an over-length permit if you've got a 53' trailer.

Taking I80 to I84 to I15... It's a 42 ft motorhome with a 40 ft stacker trailer. With trailer tongue... we're 93 ft combined nose to tail.

The route you are talking about isn't bad.

Just to say, I was on a phone earlier not my computer.

This is the route I would normally take. 1965 miles.

Going through Great Falls, 2153 miles
