I have done some welding and watched many a trailer reparid, It should not cost any where near thatprice to repair.

East has agreed to fix it for free due to "defects from the time of manufacture".

I have to flatbed it 1250 miles each way, no big deal really.

put it on a flatbed, not worth something going wrong(bad) or you showing up and they not covering it becouse you made things wores bye running it after cracks notised.
