Yes definately a bunk heater for heat. One of our trucks has an APU and it is another PITA maitenance item. Coolant hoses have sprung leaks, resulting in a loss of engine coolant (the big motor, not the APU). Starter motor went out also. I am not a fan of APU's heat.

 

Driver informed me that with broken air cooler was only 20 psi loaded pulling a hill on boost and get hear leaks. This afternoon will be maiden voyage with good t-stats and air charge cooler both.

 

Now under light acceleration it hit 30 psi and nowhere close to full potential. Looking forward to next tank of fuel to check mpg.

 

tell driver to harden up and put another blanket on the bed and stop the motor idling,or in summer take more off

 

You can always add another layer of clothing to stay warm, but you can only get so naked.

 

Im not sure if you still need help, but recently I had my truck looked over; my fuel mileage has dropped way below what I should be averaging. Come to find out my EGR valve is bad, which is causing the tractor to blow black smoke from the stack while accelerating. Now I do Idle, too stay warm and cool, but with the amount of miles I run I should still get pretty decent fuel mileage. The valve is pretty pricey as I have called around and the cheapest price i was quoted for a Det s60 is $800. Hopefully the thing will hold up one more week and then I can have it replaced. Hopes this helps..

I notice that you have had experience with leaks, I thought I would mention that it is known that some of the tubes have been blocked in these cases just to allow thing to run a little longer.

Just reading through some of these messages and would just like to add the importance of air temperature to the engine. I work for a company called Vestas aircoil who design and manufacture charge air coolers for large diesel engines. The lower the temperature of the air the more dense it is which makes it more oxygen rich, thus improving combustion.
