I hope you are right. I read that they will continue making the blocks under International Harvester. When you buy a IH engine you are actually buying a CAT engine with IH electronics. It will be interesting to see how they do with this new venture. In any case, I am going to miss those yellow engines. :tears:

Well, I run fuel for Midway/Ohare airports, also Caustic Acid for the mills.

I have owned several truck and I loved the Pre-04 emission CATS though parts were alway expensive.

I have to say tho, my favorite is a 12.7 DET, pre-emissions or a nice Big Cam Cummins

Mileage is going to be determined by the year of the truck as well.

I wont even bother looking at a 2007+ truck due to the emissions and other things. Just go on a good average, say 100K miles a year?

I am always looking for new rigs, and to be honest, I would take a 1995 with a rebuild before I'd buy a 2005 with 400k miles on it...... not just is it going to go longer in-between major mechanicals, the price should be under $20K

personally for me.. i dont like long nose trucks. if you are in the business to look good and make a little money... get a long nose.. want to make a little more get something more aerodynamic.

do your research on what motor trans and gear ratio will work with what you do.

as far as motors go..

i'd stay far away from acert cats. i hear they're aweful on fuel.

BUT i'd pick them in a heart beat over a volvo or MBE motor.. i want a motor where if i go down on the road i can get it fixed.. not wait for a dealer.

i'm a cummins guy.

after that..

detroit

cat.

How? They definitely get poor fuel economy, compared to others out there.

As far as reliability/longevity goes, my Volvo engine, with 1,066,000 miles has never been rebuilt, and still burns little oil. Also, it has never had/needed a major engine repair.

I run a 2010 IH Prostar and the QC say's my MPG is 7.7 on paper I'm a solid 7.2 MPG I run the same roads every night and am mt one way and light( about 20,000lb) the other. Oh yeah it's got a Cummins in it. I did have a problem with the DPF that was under wtty and I lost 1 day no other problems since but it's only at 105k

And it's obvious you've taken good care of it. Some last some don't why? Cuz it all boils down to the "early years" and how it was cared for

That's a brave statement. Especially considering since it doesn't apply in every situation, then it's untrue.

I have one CAT that has 985,000 miles on it and has never even had bearings replaced. And I don't use any oil.

That's not bad, I guess. My '01 Volvo w/ D12 465 Volvo engine averages 7.5-8.0 when at 20,000 lbs. loaded, and 8.5-9.0 when MT, so doing that same run, I would average about 8.0-8.5 MPG.
