There really are very few "good" areas these days. I only know about dry van, don't know anything about reefer or flat rates.

The only consistently OK area for dry van rates left is Chicago. Rates including FSC out of Chicago area can run $1.60 to $2.50 per mile depending on destination.

Rates going to Florida or the Northeast are OK, but that is because those areas have little outbound freight and the little freight that is available is real cheap. Like .70 per mile cheap.

In allmost all areas brokers will try to get truckers to run for $1.00 per mile or less.

Rates paid to brokers by shippers are picking up with steady improvements, but brokers are trying to keep an ever increasing percentage of the freight bill for themselves.

CH Robinson, the nations largest broker, enjoyed record revenue and profit in 2009, as they continued to expand their stranglehold on available freight while increasing their take of the percentage of freight charges. While large brokers and large carrier-brokerages continue to drive down rates paid to carriers and lock up an every increasing share of the freight market, the outlook for rate improvements for independents and small trucking companies remains grim.

Step deck rates are in the toilet too. $1.90 is doable on a 500 mile trip from PA to ON. It used to be over $3. Last week I was offered $4,700 on ~1500 miles from Orlando, FL to ON.....11' - 2" W x 55,000 lbs. Last year I was getting $4000 for <10' wide x <45,000 lbs.

3 weeks ago I moved a 15,000 lb generator from Guelph, ON to Burlington, ON (37 miles) and saw the pay numbers in my slip the other day: $300 freight plus $100 fuel surchage. Kept 82% of the "freight" and 100% of the FSC. That's like 9 bucks (CND) per mile. For some reason though, when they offered me this run again last week, I said "no"

Moved a full trailer of machinery last week from ON to PA. 229 miles one way. The consignee gave me a check for US$11,400 written out to the machinery movers in ON who hired us. Curious how much they will keep for themselves and how much they will pay this hard-working driver

....and what was your cut on that load pray tell? Ooops I forgot myself there for a minute. That reminds me...I need to check my PM's later right?

I've often thought you can make more money in this business just by changing your name from "XYZ Trucking" to "XYZ Specialized Machine Movers". Lots of times, it's the same job but they key is to present yourself differently and distinguish yourself.

I think you're right! I know these machinery movers charge either 3 or 5 bills an hour. I don't know what my cut will be but I don't think it'd be anything spectacular because the trip was pretty short. The check was so big because it probably covered all the work these machinery movers did for the client: loading a truck was just one part of the job. I'll keep an eye on my pay next time and will post an update to this thread once I know how much they paid us.

Big $$ here... our truck is running (reefer) for $1.36 a mile from Fresno to Detroit (w/ deadhead from Sac).

I ditched my own authority after losing my big $$ contract thanks to Rev Tony COCK (no reason to keep it with my big customer gone), we now work with our old reefer broker we used when I had my auth active, but now using the brokers authority for our one truck we have left that my husband works. He keeps us running and pays us usually when he says he will, I don't agree with most the stuff going on there but its not much better anywhere else at the moment if we wanted to ditch. Bills get paid, I have my horses, kids are fed, its fine. I know this load we are on is a double brokered load, if it was a direct load we would have seen at least $500 more out of it. I don't make the judgment call on what to take or not, I leave that to my husband to decide.

god honest truth right there folks. lol

Got my pay slip today. First thing I checked was the rate I got for this machinery load. Here's what the carrier paid me:

Pick up: Waterloo, ON
Delivery: Ridgway, PA
Miles: 229
Waiting time: $300
Driving: $557.60
Fuel surcharge: $120
Total to the truck: Cnd$977.60 or $4.27/mile

I pull a 53 foot dry van in the southeast
mainly from N Carolina to Florida or Georgia
my rates have been from 1.30 to 1.90
usually a van full to Orlando,Tampa or the area pays 1000.00 to 1100.00
from lower NC
to lower Georgia I usually get 600.00 to 700.00
to Jacksonville,Fla they usually pay from 700.00 to 800.00 from central NC
getting freight back from Florida is tough, but Georgia usually has a good share of decent loads
back up this way
right now I have a load on my trailer from Charlotte going to Tampa for 1,000.00
last week I took a load from Spartanburg,SC to Tampa for 1100.00 and got a 625 load back...
and I took a load from Cowpens,SC to Orlando for 985.00
I usually get loaded one day and off the next morning ,in a 24 hour period so I consider this ain`t too bad
