No we haven't pulled a backhaul in almost 7 weeks. Still doing ~10 outbounds a week (360 - 1000 miles round trips) but we're coming back empty. I'm being offered $850 from the port of Balt into Toronto....that's ~500 miles IIRC. I always tell them I want $1500 and even that is too cheap.

I've been running for many months now at $1.80 on the average and doing fine given my marital status and bills. After all my expenses and personal bills including $580 in health insurance I'm left with over $800 per week.
Fuel is $1.162/L tonight...I just filled up. That's $4.42/US gallon. Fuel and driver costs us $1.24/mile right now. This will put the economy over the edge.

I wonder if there is speculation that Bush will invade Iran now that he got rid of that Admiral Fallon guy?

This speaks volumes, considering you don't have a truck payment.

Yeah no worries I know that I'll have to do the trailer also. I'm getting a price on that as well.
The problem is that I have 24.5's on the trailer and the tires are almost new virgin rubber, If they give me a nice credit for those tires and wheels,...I'll switch the trailer now also. I have centramatic's on my drives that won't fit inside SS wheels, so I'll need 2 new sets of those,...and if I can put the centramatics I have from my drives to the trailer then I'm OK with buying a new set for my drives.(I don't know if they swap 22.5's to 24.5's I'm calling them today).
The immediate problem is my drives,..when I am at 55mph all is well,..when I go down a long hill and the speed increases to 62mph or more,...the damn tires blow off the wheels, so I have to do the drives now,...if they don't give me a deal on the trailer,..I'll wait till next year when the trailer tires are all worn out and then do the trailer.
I'm also looking at a weight savings of 1,000lbs when all said and done so that will put me into the 48,000lb range to be able to haul heavier if I have to (but don't really like to).
I've been doing partials for almost a month now,..and my average per mile is $2.90. Its alot more difficult because sometimes I'm reloading an empty spot before my truck is even empty from the first set of partials. Good thing is that I have the time and its working for me so I'm going to keep doing this untill fuel goes back down to $1.00 per gallon

Don't get me wrong Dog, I would swap out drives only if I were in your shoes. I've been running wides on the tractor and duals on the trailer for almost 3 years now (one year lease trailer, two my own). Like you, I've been running what I bought and will switch when I buy my new trailer. I was just dampening any notion that swapping drives only would result in better mileage. FYI, PDCA (Flying J) has decent account pricing on the X-one. Wheels get a little pricey though

Good for you Merrick. Yellow & Fedex are the biggest trucking companies (in terms of revenue) for a reason. All LTL.

Thanks, Steve, but I think I have a better idea than most. At least the ones running under a carrier's authroity.

The thread was a reflection of all the doom and gloom threads about rates, volumes, ect., that are on the board, right now.

A lot of folks plan their effort at around 2,500 miles a week, 6 mpg. Current conditions point out the fallacy of trying to plan so close.

I'm led to believe that the head count of O/O's, shrinks every year.
There is a lot more than retirement, that is causing the shrinkage.
Fuel Mileage matters but miles don't matter !!!! It's not how many miles you turn every week but the rate per mile and what you get to keep that really matters n will eather break you or make you depending on how good of a bussiness person you are !!! Yes the amout of OO or small bussiness owners or motor carriers shrinks every year !!!
