Default Anyone driving one of the new (2007) engines?

Well here we are in 2008 and I have only talked to one person so far driving a truck with the new 2007 EPA standards. I think all of the engine makers are calling these 2008 engines to prevent confusion with the 2006 engines delivered late into 2007.

Anyone driving one of these new engines yet? Any issues from the added heat in the engine compartment? fuel mileage? performance?

I was at Quad Cities KW a couple monthe ago getting a repair done and I talked with the mech. about them and it wasn't good.He told me that prior to the latest round of these emission laws 99% of the trucks they sold there had Cat engines now they have sold only 3 with Cats and all of them would not run after a short time.100% failure rate is not good and this place is not far from the factory and they still can't make them run. When these engines go into that "purge mode" they have burnt all the paint off the sides of the trailers they are pulling, what's going to happen if you got a load of hay on a flat bed???
I know my next "new" truck will be a "new to me" truck with a pre-BS reg. engine

I picked up a load last week and the driver in the door next to me had one of the new motors in a brand new truck he had just been issued...he said on his very first load out it started acting crazy and by the time they got it to the shop and hooked up to the computer it was reading somethoing like 12 different fault codes. He said when that particulate filter goes into burn mode and cuts on its almost scary how hot the exaust gets back there to. He didnt like any of it.

I have a 2008 Kenworth W900, I haven't had any problems with the engine yet, it's been on the road 3 months now.

I got one of the new ISX Cummins motors and I have nothing but praise!
Got the truck in March 2007 with 6 miles on it. I now have 128,000+ miles on it with no problems. Never been in the shop other that for "B" services.

Fuel mileage is 7.08 mpg. avg. Pretty good if you ask me.

It's just like anything else....If a trucker ain't bit*ching he ain't happy. And nobody likes change.

That's not the "last generation", it's 10-02 EPA standard.

I've got Volvo VT880 with D16 with 550 hp EPA 07 since Aug. - can't get better then 6 miles per gal.(running with 14000-18000 lbs or empty) and have problems with regeneration sycle - used to be once every 1200-1500 miles, now - 500 miles. Lots of repairs ...Sh... service - they take a time to fix it - average 2-3 days(no parts)....

i went and picked up a new freightliner for my dispatcher a few weeks ago. he bought three new classics spec'd with 14.0 detroits. i drove one bobtail about 90 miles to a shop where they install our pto driven blower equipment. it seemed pretty nice and quiet, kinda like driving a car, except every so often a little light comes on to signal that you need to press a button activate some kind of "purge" process in the exhaust? seemed to come on more often if i was driving in low range, or in the stop and go city traffic.

anyway, the sales rep was really friendly about explaing the button, how often the particulate filter needs to be replaced and all about how this technology is "ground breaking" and the "future" of more efficient, cleaner burning diesel engines.

he asked me what i thought, and i told him it was great but i felt sorry for the "mother effer" who had to work on the "pos" five years from now. he gave me a funny look - people like that dont seem to understand the simple fact that crap like this is just making the trucks more complicated to work on and driving the cost of operation up in a environment where the price of fuel is rising and the price of freight is dropping. i'm sure your 08 is great now, but your operating cost wont be when you start replacing particulate filters or a twin turbo. where i come from you make stuff last, and when it wont last anymore, you rebuild it. you do what you can, when you can, yourself. it'll take a lot more than this bs for me to give up my 3406b.

'08 485hp ISX. The torque goes on forever. It's like driving an automatic. Mileage sucks tho. Might get better. Hope so.
