And as much as California gets trashed for high taxes, lib government, and the land of fruits and nuts, we do have Proposition 13, to protect against our property taxes ever going up. Of course the libs hate it, and want it repealed, but GOOD luck to them getting the public to overturn a law that protects every homeowner.
And with the way values skyrocketed over the past 10 years here, many old, or poor, or blue collar worker would have lost their homes to the tax collector. My friend is 77, and lives on SSI of about 800 a month. He built his home in 1984. Cost him 24,000. Taxes run about $260 a year (1.1% of asessed value). Without prop 13, his taxes would be close to $4400 , as the home is now worth 400,000. (and 500k a year ago). No way could he live here if he had to pay that amount of tax, much less any mortgage. Howard Jarvis and Bill Gann fought hard to get that tax reform bill passed, and to hear the mainstream media's opinion of them, they were narrow-sighted economic buffoons. Im surprised that a state this liberal has the most conservative property tax structure.

I use to live in a small town in Mass a while ago. We needed to raise taxes and everyone complained. A town meeting was called and being the small town that it was a slide was put up for everyone to see. It showed how much income we had and the bills. The city council sat back and asked, what should be cut out. We voted to raise the taxes. The good old days.
