CW
CW..you've been given some great advise here.

BanditsCuz gave you a great example, with some realistic numbers...that didn't include everything you are responsible for, as pertains to operating a truck.

Mike3 gave you great advise, regarding how to go about getting where you want to be.

I would include this. While you are running up and down the road, working for Swift or whomever, as a company driver, write down all your operating numbers. Fuel, tire work, oil purchases, PM's, windshield wipers, your personal expenditures. Track it all, including the mileage wage you get as a company driver. Divide the miles you travel by the $$ you spend(remember..include your wages), and that will give you the short version of what it cost's just to operate the truck. You still won't know what the road taxes, insurance cost's, and several other items are running...but you can ask questions and get a good approximation of what you will need to make, in order to be a successful O/O.

I'm taking a week off this round (5 days), but..I just turned 24,000$ in revenue in 5 weeks of hard running. My truck payment is only $850, with insurance cost's of $167 each month. It's a used truck (2001) so the payment is far less than what an L/P operate pay's out for that new-used truck from most company's.

You can teach a business man to drive a truck, but can you teach a truck driver to run a business? It's alot harder I personally am working on my masters from the school of hard knocks.

there is a reason it is called a 'fleece purchase'. Leasing to a company is much different then doing a L/P with a company. Finding the money to purchase your truck isn't that difficult....unless your credit is really, really bad. Since you live at home and have some money put away you might be alright. We finance people everyday and we have several sources for money. I haven't heard many good things about a L/P.

That being said, you have only been driving for 8 months. I would give it a full year at Swift before I made any move. The most important thing to do is research. Research the company you want to lease on with, research the true cost of owning the business....get a handle on your costs so you know what you need to make in order to breakeven and make money.

Good luck.
