Default annual inspections?

A quick question for you O/O's...
Do you have to get your annual inspection in the state that your truck is registered in or can you get it elsewhere???
My truck is registered in PA but I hardly ever actually go to PA- Its coming up for a year old and I am wondering what the procedure is?

Thanks

You can get a DOT Federal inspection anywhere. I live in New Hampshire and we have our own state inspection so we don't need to get a Federal inspection. Some states like New Hampshire either meet or exceed Federal requirements and therefore there stickers are good without the federal ones.

Any TA with a shop will perform an annual inspection for a reasonable fee. They will give you a hard copy and the decals for your truck/trailer. I have noticed that weigh station inspectors do check those decals.

What paperwork does one need in order to have an annual inspection done?
I just bought my tractor and have not received the title back from my bank yet. Do I have to have registration at time of inspection?

Yes, the truck does have to be registered before you can get it inspected.

I have never been asked for my registration before getting a DOT inspection. They usually check the Vin number and note it on the inspection form. Most TA's can do an inspection for you as can many truck garages. It is usually much easier to find a truck stop to do one for you, especially if you rarely get by the house. Some carriers have designated inspection sites. And it doesn't matter which state you get your inspection in, as long as they are authorized to do a Federal DOT inspection.

You may want to check. I live in New Hampshire and our state inspection sticker takes the place of the DOT one. If your state inspection meets the minimum requirements of DOT then that's all you need.

GMAN is right. You don't need your truck registered to get a DOT inspection but you do need it registered to get a state inspection.

I'm 99% sure PA state inspection is all you need. New England states are the strictest on vehicle inspections.
