Anyone got "tips" that I can use when interviewing the next batch of guys to help me find someone responsible and sane?? lol
A good positive attitude, somewhat well spoken to customers or brokers, clean and neat (or at least clean :lol: ), good ability to do the job, and someone that can solve the problem at hand, (whatever it be that day), without holding their hand.

Having said that, here is the catch.......When you find that person he'll probably have his own company or will be secure in his present job. :sad:

It's hard to find GOOD people.

Best of luck!

What I always did when(past tense) I had employees was pay them on a sliding scale. Going average around these parts was about 28% but I broke it up to a low base with incremental steps.

Base=20%
Clean truck, maintenance up to snuff, safety(tickets or damage to truck)=5%
Fuel Mileage over 7mpg=5%

Anytime they had a Level 1 inspection and passed I gave a $250 bonus. This really kept them on their toes.

If the driver found any work on his own I would give him another 5% of that work. I would never pay for items not in his paperwork. That is to say if he failed to turn in a trip report for a job but I got paid for it, he would not receive any money.

And they NEVER got their check unless I got my paperwork.

Having said all this I just got tired of having drivers, it is a headache and I could never find anyone who would work as hard as me.

Yeah I know where your coming from to a sense I work with my dad non driving right now next year will be going back. But anyways I know what your kinda going through. Just from experience I would not want to work with family of any kind again. I love my dad hes a good guy and all but working with him a just not been what I thought it would be. Maybe some of the guys on the work sites do not like your brother and could be making somethings up just a thought

I hear ya there. Then when I went back to being an O/O and the rates around here took a crap I sold the rest of my stuff and went to work for a union excavating company with full benefits.

Now every minute that I work is paid time.

It is agonizing I know. Every driver thinks there the best,every owner thinks that there is no such thing as a good driver. Case in point, my Dad hired this young guy fresh out of the Marine Corps to drive heavy haul to Las Vegas from San Diego. Dude was golden,sharp,well spoken and mannered,I worked locally with him for a week got to watch his skills from the escort car, he was good no worries told Dad to cut him loose. Long story short on his first trip he was supposed to stop and pick up a rubber tired loader,he didn't,drove to Vegas EMPTY! Within 6 hours of arriving he was in jail the tractor was impounded and the trailer was nowhere to be found. We sorted it all out,Dad being a forgiving former Marine gave him another shot,within a month he was AWOL with the truck again,he was arrested by the CHP,fired, and last year he sent my Dad a Christmas card from Florida. By the way Floored I have a car seat in my Peterbilt for those days when you just have to do it, the kid loves it and no one has hassled me a bit about it.
