What would you suggest to be used on an older engine to clean the injectors? Has anyone used Lucas Injector Cleaner?

 

Get a quart of transmission fluid and pour about half in each tank while you fill up. It will do as good, if not better job, than what you would buy commercially for a fraction of the price. I used to have an old 238
Detroit. When the injectors started to clog up I would put some transmission fluid in the fuel tanks and within a few miles it would clear them up and it would start running smoothly, again.

 

GMAN, would this pose a problem if they ever checked me for off road diesel? Been doing this since Oct 06, and haven't been checked yet, nor have I ever heard of anyone getting checked for this hauling logs where I'm from.

Also is I do this, how often would you do it?

If you ever did get your fuel analyzed you wouldn't have a problem by putting in transmission fuel. The analysis would show it's transmission fluid

 

You could keep an empty or spare bottle of transmission fluid in the truck and show them if they ask. They rarely check for dye unless there is a reason to suspect you are using off road diesel.

I believe I used it about every 3rd fill up. That truck was bad for the injectors getting dirty. I don't think you will need to do it on every fill up, but if the injectors don't seem to be clean, then you may want to do it more frequently. And you are welcome.

 

The mech's at the terminal here, put tranny fluid directly into the fuel filter, to clean the injectors. They just spin off the dirty filter,,fill up the new one, and spin it on. Works pretty slick.

 

I have done that with the fuel filters on many occasions. You are right, it work really well.

To answer your original question Lucas is a excellent product for cleaning injectors and I think Sea Foam is even better yet.

 

Steve, when the injectors get really bad, you will notice a loss of power and may run a little rough. Any type of transmission fluid will do. I usually go to an Autozone or other auto parts store and pick up a quart of their store brand. You can also pick it up a WalMart. If you just want to do it as a matter of maintenance you can do it about every 3rd fill up or when you change your fuel filters. I normally change my fuel filters when I change my oil. If you prefer doing it at that time, instead of putting fuel in the filter before installing, fill with transmission fluid instead.
