I'm still working on changing that. Haven't had much luck yet. Nobody wants a HHG trailer full of air. :cry:

LOL. Just because they're backhauls doesn't mean they're cheap. We don't work for soup.....if I can't get a rate we'll put her into the wind. Think we averaged over $3 in Feb.

I love the brokers that say "but it will pay for your fuel". I tell them we'll blow the horn when we drive by empty.

Rank that was me asking Steve about the $$. Thanks for summary- I sold a taxi business that I started in 91 last summer and I am looking for sometime new with less, shall we say issues. I got really tired of 125 cab drivers bitching when they took home $200 after a 12 hour day and bitching more when they took home $350 because "I spened so much in da gas Mr. Bill." I am evaluating all these posts and right now just trying to find a cheap way of getting my class A. Thanks for the numbers. Bill

Rev,
You mean you're thinking about hauling freight Rev? Can you do that under your HHG authority or do you need an MC number?

Bill,
Yikes. Starting a trucking business. Yikes. Finding drivers can be a challenge. I mean, you can get good ones, but they need to be well paid and well taken care of and the margins in this business are pretty slim already.

If you really look into the numbers I posted you'll notice that I have alot of dead miles. That's because of two reasons;

1) we live in a bad freight area. Outbound loads are 150 miles away from the yard and they only pay about $2/mile for step decks. Well, the sad fact is that $800 on 400 miles = $2/mile but it's only $1.45/mile when you add in my 150 DH to P/U. My costs are about $1.40 this week (higher fuel) so there's no profit in it.

2) we are regional meaning we're usually only out a day or two at a time before we come back and that takes us full circle to prolem #1 again.

If you're going to have a trucking business, base yourself out of a good area...especiallly if the drivers want to be home....and they will. My advice is move to Ohio or at least get drivers from Ohio. Seems like you can always get a load out of OH.

We have the same authority to haul conventional freight as anyone else. We just choose not to.

Anyone want to buy a trailer full of fresh Colorado air? I'll have one for sale in about 5 days.......

rank, what kind of rates are you seeing for step deck freight out of Baltimore? Also, how many loads are going to Ohio from Baltimore? I'm wandering if one could do some turns and make make money running that lane?

$2 to $2.25. More if it's machinery or vehicles. But these rates are going to ON. I don't know about rates that aren't going to Canada.

I think you could do OK doing turns out of OH to anywhere :shock: . I'd say Baltimore, Phillie, Richmond or Newark. That whole area is fairly good if you can stand it.
