Blond Question Fuel Surcharge
If a company says it will pay 100% fuel surcharge on all loaded miles... what does that mean. I'm not an owner op, but I need to know how to understand that statement. I am thinking they are paying for all fuel while loaded but that can't be right. Right?

Most companies charge their customers a surcharge due to the high price of fuel. It can vary from company to company, and customer to customer. That money is SUPPOSED to go to the person paying for the fuel. It is not designed to cover all the fuel costs, but rather, to put the fuel costs down to a reasonable level (at about what they were before the fuel prices went out of control, in the $1.25 range).

If you are a company driver, you do not get a fuel surcharge. If you are on a fleece purchase or a O/O leased to a company you get whatever is agreed upon.

No, an O/O is supposed to get 100% of it. Most of the big carriers provide no way of verifying that their O/O's really are.
I heard an anecdote last night that JB Hunt was paying $0.60 per gallon on average for their fuel, but that they were charging their O/O's about $0.06 per gallon under the pump price. I haven't seen any data to support this, but it doesn't seem too far fetched.

Any company that keeps some of the fuel surcharge for themselves rather than passing 100% on to the contractor (owner operator or lease operator) is, in my opinion, IMMORAL!
That is just wrong. The fuel surcharge should go to the person purchasing the fuel. If the trucking company pays for the fuel, then, fine, they should get the fuel surcharge 100%. But these companies that only pass on MOST or SOME of the fuel surcharge have simply found yet another way to squeeze more money out of their contractors.
Owner operators get the short end of the stick every time.
Sorry- this is just a real sore spot to me. It's the principle of the thing.
We get 100% of the fuel surcharge.

Many of our contracts that used to waive the FSC are now paying one - albeit a pretty small one. I tend to avoid those accounts like the plague.

While we're not mentioning names of carriers...I once pulled for said carrier, and my first haul for them had no FSC....from Colorado to Florida... :roll:

The load I'm under right now - 2 shipments. Both have FSC. One is just over $400, and the other is just over $200. The $400 one is on a 14,000 lb load, and the $200 one is on a 4000 lb load, plus a car.
Both loads are going about 900 miles.
My truck gets 5.75 MPG.
Last time I bought fuel, I paid $2.419, not counting discounts.
You do the math. :wink:
