My husband got back into trucking after about a 15 yr hiatus. Most good companies wanted 2 years recent experience. On advise from a friend he leased on to container company to haul containers just to get the 2 years under his belt. This worked out fine until about a 3 months or so ago and they hired a bunch of new drivers. O/O's with multiple trucks. Since then he is only being offered junk loads or is being told they don't have any freight. He is not the only one that this is happening to. He still needs about 6 more months to get the 2 years in. Has truck but no trailer.

ANY IDEAS? Anyone know of a good company he can lease on with that will keep the freight coming?

Has considered getting his own authority, but would still like to lease until we can build up more funds before striking out on his own.

We have 2 kids in college and that has depleted alot of our savings.

landstar or mercer, although their not quite your typical leases...

landstar only requires a year experience and they`ll supply the trailer for a fee.

Most everybody else requires a year, and containers aren't "the cream of the crop" in this industry. Consider this your step from diapers to training pants- you are ready to fly the coop!

Check out some carriers online, and get on the phone to see if you can get around some requirements. I'm living proof this can be done.

Landstar doesn't require a rental fee if you pull one of their vans. Any of their other trailers will have a fee attached. Most carriers who pull vans don't require a rental fee.

Gman, come on now, Landstar charges for the use of thier trailer, it's just stated as such in the contract!

75% using yours

If thats not a rental fee, it sure smells like one!

If you pull anything other than a van for Landstar you will pay them about $165/wk trailer rental. And they calculate their percentage on 98% of the line haul rather than 100%. In other words, they pay 67% of 98%, which is about 65% of the line haul or 75% of 98%, which comes out to just over 73%. Most carriers distinguish between using their trailer as opposed to your bringing a trailer with you.
