I looking to buy my first truck I thinking of getting 2003-2004 Freightliner century or columbia arround 500.000 miles. What are the important tings to check on it?

Take it for a test drive, have an oil sample done and make sure the ECM matches the odometer for starters

save your money pay CASH (if you can)

Pay cash or take out a second mortage on your house and deduct the interest :wink:

Maybe get a small business loan as well, but you'll need experience in your chosen trade first

You might want to check the maintenance records. Freightliners are mostly fleet trucks. Some don't do the proper maintenance. Talking to the previous owner or driver would help. That can be more difficult. And cash is ALWAYS better than leasing. Never borrow money unless you must. If you plan on leasing to a carrier, make sure you have a lease in hand before signing on the dotted line. Unless you have some verifiable experience you may find it difficult to get a lease. If you plan on running your authority, make sure you can get adequate insurance before you buy the truck. Good luck.

Something I've been wondering related to this topic.

Apparently it is not premature to talk to carriers about leasing on before you purchase your first truck? I wasn't sure that carriers would take you seriously if you did not yet own one. I realize that the carrier will need to interview, verify previous employment/experience, driving record, maybe background check, etc. also so maybe they do these things "in the meantime" while you are making the purchase of the truck.

So, it doesn't hurt to talk to some carriers before a purchase? Should I expect them to show/provide me a copy of their lease contract before I purchase?

along with that the carrier will only take trucks of certain age. Like truck can be no older than 5 years with a certain 5th wheel height so check with the company you wish to lease to if not getting your own authority

The better carriers don't care about the age of your equipment as long as they look decent and will pass a DOT inspection. It is usually the lower paying mileage carriers who want a newer truck. However, it is something to consider, depending on where you plan on leasing your truck. Any legitimate carrier should be willing to show you their lease, but may resist showing it to you until you get to orientation. If you plan on financing your purchase, many lenders will want to see a copy of the lease which could be contingent upon your being able to buy a truck. Carrier's will talk to you about leasing on with them prior to getting a truck. Some may try to sway you toward leasing one of their trucks. It is a bad idea to lease a truck from your carrier. They won't sign a lease with you until you have a truck and they make certain you meet their hiring requirements.
