I would guess the meter runs fast at first while the heater is getting the temp up. After that I think it would calm down just enough to maintain itself at the right temp.

Papa Rick I do what you are planning on doing. Wall mounted timer. Just make sure that the timer is rated for atl east 1500 watts. That is what most heaters are rated I think. I was able to find one at Home Depot. A good heavy cord too. I think mine is 14 ga maybe 12 but I think it is 14 ga.
I keep my truck inside and I still plug it in for 3-4 hours. Not only for easier starting but I think it is easier on the motor.

I appreciate the information very much. I have mine on 12 gauge cord, and am planning on getting the timer this week. I could not believe the ease at which it started the other morning when it was 28 here.

Turned over twice and fired right up!

Have any of you guys heard of a WABASCO heater? Is it just a heater for cab and engine or is an APU. I had a rep call offering a free trial. I dont want to waste my time with the sales visit if you can give me some first hand info.

NOT an APU, around $1400.00. Works well, I don't have one BUT have friends who do.
