Default What gears are where?

I know this may seem like a stupid question. I recently started truck driving school. I have never driven a manual. My big problem is not unstand which gears go where and the diagram on where they are makes no sense to me. Can anyone help me out? I know where reverse, first, and sixth gears are but having trouble with the rest.

Your school should cover the different types of transmissions and shift patterns there are out in the industry. Your driving instructor should show and demostrate the shift pattern your training truck has. Although you will make plenty of initial mistakes, muscle memory will very quickly develop for the truck you are driving, although it can be fun/frustrating if you move between trucks with different equipment.

I don't know how long you have been school, but I wouldn't worry about it; By the time school is over you will know the shift pattern. It will take time and experience to learn double-clutching and timing your shift to engine rpm's and road speed.

Just what danske said. Your school may have rules about what gear to start in or shifting around corners, that will all be explained.
Remember you are the PAYING student! Don't let yourself be shortchanged, if you don't get it ask for clarification most instructors will be happy to help.

Let the letter "H" be your friend. Most transmissions will follow a simple "H" pattern, you may have to repeat it to get into high range as in a 9 or 10 speed but it isn't as complicated as it seems.

my truck is a 10 speed
with a hi and lo range
like mentioned above,it looks like a "H" pattern exept for 1st and 6th
1st and 6th are all the way to the left and down, the rest follow the :H: pattern
low range is gears 1-5
high range is gears 6-10
on the side of my gear shift is a button which you can flip up or down. When it is down,it is in low range, when it is up it is in high range
start out in low range, end up[ in high range
when I get thru 5th,I flip the switch and hit 6th gear

play with a while you`ll get the hang of it
