Default Help this newbie with a eaton 9 speed

I am a farmer and not too familiar with eaton transmissions or trucks in general(I do have a class A and have driven semis around a very tiny bit). Anyways I need to get a truck to haul grain and found a relatively nice 94' ford straight truck that would work. Like I said nice truck, I thought once I got rolling shifted ok, but starting out is a pain. I will embarrass myself with my terminology, but when u go all the way to the left with the shifter, (reverse and first) there isn't much resistance in the shifter. Other trucks I could really feel it, while this one seems to glide somewhat smoothly between the reverse and 1st spot and the 2nd and 3rd spot. It also grinds like heck just trying to get it into first or second to start out with(have tried double clutching). Is this something to be concerned about? Or should be expected in a 20 year old truck?

Thank you guys if u have read this far! I appreciate any help or advice given to this newbie farmer!

Sounds like a clutch problem. Try just "tapping" the clutch in a double move. NEVER use 1st gear to start. Learn to "float." Start in 2nd or 3rd. May have to push the clutch to the floor to get it in. If still grinding from a dead stop, you have a bad "clutch brake."
