I live in Alabama and my CDL will expire 8-2011. I also have a Hazmat End. on my CDL for the past year and would like to know if anyone knows if I will have to redo the Background and FingerPrints or can I just renew my license and keep the Hazmat?

The paperwork you got, when the endorsement was placed on your DL tells you when the endorsement period expires.

I believe your hazmat endorsement expires with your license. Unless the requirements have changed, you need to go through the entire background check every time the endorsement is renewed.

I got in contact with Transportation Security Administration today and found out that :::
No matter what the expiration date is on your letter you get approving your Background/Fingerprints, if you have to renew your license or apply for a lost license you have to redo the Background/Fingerprints. ($ 89.25). Let's say you did the Background and Fingerprints 3 mo. ago and now your license needs to be renewed ( every 4 years in Alabama ) you have to redo the Background/Fingerprints no later than 30 days of your expiration date on your license.

I just did this. My CA CDL expires in 2013. I went to the DMV to add a Hazmat endrosement. I had to retake all the tests(Combo, air brakes, general knowledge, tanker and doubles and triples). I passed them all and when the fingerprints came in my new expiration date is 2016.

I renewed my CDL back in 8-11-2007 ( good for 4 years in AL.) without Hazmat, Then just about a year ago new job required Hazmat so I had to go through the Background/Fingerprints to have Hazmat added to my CDL ( expiration date is still 8-11-11 ) and only had to take the Hazmat Test. I have never had to retake all the test when I had to renew my CDL. So every 2 years I have to retake the Hazmat Test, Background/Fingerprints, but my expiration date does not change on my CDL. They didn't want you to retake the Road test did they? Just never heard this before about retaking all the test just to add Hazmat.
