I am new to the world of percentage pay. If you get 23% of the load line haul what does that mean? 23% of the total of the load?

It should be 23% of what the owner of the truck is paid for the load.

Is percentage pay an allright deal or should a person be careful? Thanks for the info!! What is the normal % pay for starting out with a company?

It could be an alright deal AND you should be careful. It really depends on the type of freight you might be hauling. If it was just general commodities in a dry van it would probably blow getting 23%. I would tell you that there is a lot of uncompensated time with this type of pay, but it is the same way with mileage. Sometimes I wonder if these companies are paying the percentage from the total revenue of the load or what is left over after all expenses.

It really depends on how honest the company is and what kind of freight the haul. If they haul a lot of cheap freight or you end up doing a lot of dead heading in between loads you are not going to be very happy.

This might sound silly, but you could look at it this way...if you get paid 23% of a load of toilet paper, you probably won't make much. If you get paid 23% of a load of cattle, you would make pretty good money.

I haul dry-van freight on percentage (24.5%). It pretty much is at the low end of the pay scale. The only reason I'm still at this company is because of my hometime. It sure isn't the pay, benefits, equipment, etc...

Most companies and owner operators who have drivers pay them on what the truck makes as a linehaul rate. Most will not pay on the fuel surcharge. If the load pays $1,000 plus fsc of $100 you will usually be paid on the $1,000. The fsc is designed to offset the higher cost of fuel. The fsc is pretty low right now due to fuel costs being less.
