So, I'm relatively new to pulling hazmat, as I've only done two hazmat loads. I know in some states, like OH, you are NOT supposed to bypass the scales even with prepass if you have placarded hazmat. What about other states?
I was going through TN last week with a mixed hazmat load and saw no signs telling me NOT to bypass. I got a green light on my prepass, so I kept on going, but someone came on the CB calling me an idiot for bypassing with hazmat. Nobody came out and pulled me over, but it got me wondering if all states want you to go in despite the green light, or are we okay to bypass with green light unless otherwise told. Anyone with some insight here? Thanks!

I never stop in OHIO if I get a green light when hauling Hazmat. The 3 states that you must stop with Hazmat despite getting a green light are AZ,AR and NV.
From the PrePass manual that you recieve. Ohio and West Virgina require an Alliance for Uniform Hazmat Transportation license if hauling hazardous materials/waste. Follow in cab signal. Disregard state signs to pull into weigh station

I just got the Pre-Pass. ![]() I have never been chased, when by-passing the AZ scales. I have never had a problem in NV or AR either. I stopped at the Hope scales, on I-30, back in 05, and asked them about pre-pass....because it was the first time I had driven a truck with PP in it. Those guy's told me, that unless I was given a red light, or there was a sign posted, haz-mat or not...keep on trucking. More than a few times the chase cars have been sitting in the cut-outs, and they have never pulled me over. I always pull through OH scales...cuz the sign's are posted. Same with ID. There are a number of states that are in the "Alliance for Uniform Hazmat Transportation" license. NV is one of them. ID isn't. Ohio administer's the plan.

My new truck came with a new Pre-Pass transponder. And it had a little flyer about Pre-Pass, something similar to what the OP just posted, but it wasnt a 'manual'.
Anytime i get a green light, i dont care what the signs all say anymore, i get the green, i get to by-pass. Want me to come in? i better get the red light or no indication. Cannot tell you how many times i get the green light then see a sign that says "ALL TRUCKS OVER 10T MUST WEIGH"...so i pull in, only to get the 'bypass' light, and i dont cross a scale.....WTF....why waste my time then.

Bust a scale one time and you'll get a whole new attitude about scales. kc0iv

Ohio has signs before the scales that say that all HazMat loads must enter the weigh station. Seems pretty clear.
