To the OP:

The point is you're starting at the end. The question you're asking here has to do with becoming legal to work in the US, not truck driving.

The first thing you need to do, regardless of how much time you spent in the US previously is get legal to work here!

Your best bet would be to contact an immigration lawyer in the San Diego area (since you're closest to there) and ask them what to do to get back in on a work visa, permit or whatever. Once you have that out of the way then apply for work as a driver. A lawyer will give you the real scoop, an internet message board will not! This is an immigration issue, not a driving issue.

You seem conscientious and determined to make it work. Your posts suggest a desire to do the right thing and be safe at it. Best of luck to you.

okay, my two cents worth.....

i am by far a racist. I have several mexican, black, etc. friends. I do not have a problem with ANYBODY coming into this country and getting a job. My problem is anybody who comes into this country who is ILLEGAL. Somehow they find employment (most of the time they steal identities to do it, s.s. #s and the like) or check into hospitals, rack up tens of thousands of medical bills, then skip the country, and leave the mess for american taxpayers to foot the bill.

I am all for anybody who wants to come here and take a job away from an american, because it is the american who dont want to do that job....so if they dont want the job, give it to someone who can. but let that other person be LEGAL.

Also, you want to drive a truck? great...be LEGAL, pass the state tests, whatever, and get your Class A CDL like every other truck driver on the road.
