Default hate to beat a dead horse.

hello all this is jimbo63,well after blowing national freight off becouse of the new york city problem and the boroughs.i decided im gonna take there offer for northeast out 5 to 6 days home for two.the only problem im facing is i need to try not to phyc myself out about going to nyc and the boroughs its no different then driving anywhere else with tight streets and turns im a driver thats what i do. i hate to not take a position becouse i have a hang up about going into nyc and the boroughs. ive been off the road for eight months and if i dont get driving know its gonna get harder to find a driving position the longer im out of a truck.so i will have to do new york city and the boroughs which im nervous about doing but ive talked with numerous people and trucks are allowed in those areas you just have to stay on the truck through routes and and if you do deliver to nyc and the boroughs stay on the local truck routes.i recieved a map for truck drivers from nyc dot that shows through and local truck routes for drivers delivering their.i also talked with national freight and told them of my concerns that i would like to stay away from the boroughs and the city until ive been back in a truck for month or so just til i get the feel for the road again.they said it wouldnt be a problem and theyll discuss it with me when i go to orientation.id like to thank everyone in this forum for all the help and advice i recieved .and if theirs anyone on this site that has some experience with new york city and the boruoghs i could use some advice ill take notes so when i do go there im ready.im gonna go with national freight, and try to stay accident free in 2009 two accidents will be off my liscence and then i can pick and choose companies.but if national freight is willing to give me a chance i have to take it becouse im not getting a lot of offers due to my accidents. i have had some offers but they were what you all would consider bottom feeder companies and i worked for national and even though i did have some issues with them they did treat me fairly well and always payed me what they owed me.ill take any advice you can offer .thanks jimbo

NYC sounds like a pain, but I may have to deal with it myself if I want to get the time required to get back with my former company.
There's this outfit in town that hauls produce from here in SoCal, to areas near there.
I'm quite sure I won't have a problem navigating those tight streets.
The key in this case will be to just, be patient, get in, and then get out of there as humanly possible.
They say LA is bad, NYC looks as cramped as a sardine-can.

On the brightside, I'll get my time, and it'll be cool telling everyone in the near-future about driving a truck through that area.

I think that is a good atitude Jimbo. I am a lifetime New Yorker and know it is challenging enough as a 4 wheeler in the city. Personally, I would look at it as a challenge. Try to find ways to make it easy as possible on yourself. The map was a good idea. Hopefully you are getting a decent pay bump for going into the city.

Watch out for pedestrians and don't take any shit from anyone and you should be OK

jimbo, my dear you're psyching yourself out! it's easy to do i know because you have so much riding on it.

do you know any other truck drivers that go to the city? get their cell numbers. that's what a group of us do where i work. we've got 4 or so guys that do the 5 boroughs all the time, so the ones of us that go up only once a week or so call them. and believe me, sometimes just being able to talk with someone while you're driving up there will help calm you down. then once you go in and out a couple times you'll get more confident.

or post here where you have to go the first time and we'll see if we can help.

you be allright :P

vavega ,i dont know anyone that goes into nyc or the boroughs.i do have a few questions ive been looking at the site for nyc and the boroughs, and it shows through truck routes and local truck routes in red and blue so if i stick to those routes i shouldnt have any issues with law enforcement .its just with my accidents already on my liscence i really need to be on my best .and in the regs it says something to the effect that if your trailer is over 48 feet your okay as long as your axles measure 43 ft from king pin to center rear most axle.so would i need to make sure to slide my axle and measure or am i misinterpriting what im reading for regs.also ive been told to go in their late at night by some people, less traffic but that isnt always possible.if i have to pick up or drop at 2:00 in the afternoon in queens .its gonna have to be done.thank you for any and all advice i tried to pm you but the sight says i cant for some reason

well then i'll be one if you like. i don't know the whole city but i have friends i can call and i will if need be. the reason you can't pm me is you don't have enough posts under your chain drive wallet.

when sliding your tandems make sure you don't slide too far forward, when making turns the overhang in the back can hit parked cars, concrete poles ops: or telephone poles. ops:

i drive dispatch nuts every night when i get back asking where i'm going the next day. i ask for full address when it's somewhere new and i ask other drivers and then look it up on streets. i also use the web, googling the business name since so many have their own websites. google earth too just to see what the area looks like.

i'll send you a pm.

your pm did come through, so congratulations you are now a full member of CAD.

you might change your mind about calling someone when you're in the left lane of astoria blvd trying to get on the BQE and manage to miss the ramp. that ohshit moment when you realize how big you screwed up. ops:

but a desperate phone call to a friend can put your mind at ease when he says
ok doofus, go a 1/4 mile and turn right at the end of the cemetery and get on there.
:P
