Default Kids at home?

How many of y'all have kids at home, and do you regret getting into trucking because you can't see your kids that often or is it still worth it?

Just curious,thanx.

I just had a son (my first). he turned 2 months yesterday. I will miss a lot of stuff first hand, but at least I know I will be providing for him and we will be better off in the long run. I guess the best situation would be to run OTR until he turns a year to a year and a half and then maybe find something with a little more home time. It will be a hard call to make. I either will miss the family or the road either way it is hard to take.

When I started driving my kids were teenagers, and up to that point my job had already done a good job of making me miss important milestones in their lives.

Did i miss them when I was on the road - yes. Did I regret it - wishy washy answer. With my kids they learned to be less dependent on dad for answers. Although they are still having a problem getting the trash and dishes done.

I grew up in a truckers family. My pops was gone alot, but he commanded that we behave at home and at school. I rememeber one time I gave my neighbors dog a bone with hot sauce on it and she told him. When he got home man you talk about a killer a$$ whopping I'm talking wheps all over my body. I can go one about some of the stuff he would do to us if we acted up. Believe me he had control of the house even at the pay phone when he called. He did miss alot of our games and stuff but when open house came around or teacher conferences he was ALWAYS there ready to knock us out if we had been in trouble. Other than that my old man did a good job raising the boys from the sit of his old cabover. Just to finish my brother went to jail for stealing some sanders from Bills Dollar store and when pops got home from picking him up it was slaughter time in that house and then he made my brother go and wash trash cans, mop, and dust shelves for the store. After that we never got in anymore trouble.

None. My kids are grown and out...I started trucking at 52.

Another reason why OTR is ok by me. I can talk to my kids just as much on my cell phone in the truck as I can at home.

5 kids by 3 marriges, first 2 woofs  couldn't handle me being away. My wife now was raised by her mom and stepdad, who was an O/O, so she understands. My monkey twins love the fact that dad drives a big truck. I'm home every weekend and talk to them every night on the phone. Do I miss being away? h3ll yea, but they understand that when mommy graduates from nursing, daddy will be home every night. Do I regret it? With my 3 older kids I do. Not a day goes by that I don't think of them.

I can tell you from the kids view point. I'm 35. My dad either chased wars, cows, rodeos or whitelines in a truck. He was always gone. He missed alot of things when my brothers and sisters and I were growing up.
However, he always found a way to get home for the big stuff and there are 5 of us kids.
He regrets missing some of the small stuff but we don't hold it against him. we've had a pretty good life because of his efforts.

oh and p.s. I've spent my life following his lead and I don't think i'm doing too bad a job.
