I was in tool and die for 5 years and was doing great but the manufacturing industry went to hell here in Ohio from 2000-2005 and I was laid off for the 3rd and final time.

The job center classified me as a"dislocated worker" due to off shore outsourcing and I was qualified for funding to go to school.

I applied for WIA and they paid $4,000 for me to go to a local community college to get my CDL.

Tool and die was a good paying trade with lots of employment opportunity in the 1980's and 1990's but it collapsed in 2000 and the state lost over a quarter million jobs.

OhioMohawk,
When you applied were you on a L/O status? I am thinking about trying to get my CDL by attending weekend classes at SSCC so I can continue to work and get paid while getting my license. By doing it that way, I have a feeling that I wouldn't be able to qualify for anything, but also don't want to have to incurr the expense in full myself either...

If you don't want to incur the expense of training yourself, you can always go with one of the training carriers. The down side is that you will have a very expensive obligation to repay unless you stay with them for the duration of your contract, which is usually about a year. The pay will be a bit lower if you go through their training program as opposed to paying for your own schooling.
