Need some mechanical help here. Have the Series 60 Detroit in my Freightliner. This problem always arises when the heater is on. Happened last winter and now again. I smell exhaust fumes and my eyes burn. Was looked at by the Roehl mechanics last winter and they could not find any exhaust leaks.

I remember hearing something about this on XM 171 Open Road channel but don't remember just what the caller said causes it. My bunk heater was not working last night (another story) and I had to idle. All night I had fumes and had to keep the bunk vent open. Thank heavens the bunk heater is working tonight.

Anyone got the answer or suggestions.

Until it's repaired, I'd definitely put a carbon monoxide detector in your truck. It could very well save your life.

Also, if it does go off you have plain proof that the truck has a problem.

Check to see if the flex hose may be leaking on top. It can sometimes be a little difficult to spot unless you get underneath the truck. You can usually spot where the leak is by soot. If it is leaking you should notice black soot where it is leaking. If it is on top of the flex hose next to the cabin it can sometimes be difficult to see.

 

How clean is your engine? If you have a lot of dirt and oil on it there is a possbility that is what you are smelling and making your eyes water.

Try running your environment controls on Recirc if possible. Even if you have to use the AC setting with the heat mixed in to do this it may help keep some of those fumes out until you can track down the problem and get it fixed.

 

I smell fumes whenever I leave the recirculation button off on the ac controls.

 

It,s your bunk heater when it,s system is flooded , white smoke comes out of a flex tube exhaust from heater. Here,s the fix dump trl. air , then disconnect glad hand , then set truck on high idle , then supply trl. air , then hold glad hand tight onto the flex pipe exhaust for 10- 30 seconds . Don,t always work , you sometimes have to repeat procedure. Make sure to keep one hand on the flex pipe. I was at roehl for a few days , went there to be a trainer , not my cup of tea . stay safe

 

Make sure your cab air filter is clean, also like G-Man said check flex pipe under the truck, Freightliner had some problems with exhaust leaks there.
