Local for the most part will be max hours per day, odd start times and pushing the 10 hour rule between on duty periods. The up side is you are at your home, but usually all you want to do is rest. There are some 8-5 jobs, but everybody and his brother is trying to nail those jobs down when they are available. At least this is how it has been for me in dry bulk.

8-5 is a pretty rare find for local. My brother works for UPS as package driver and he usually works from 8am to 6-7pm. And he's been with them for almost 20 years. The again he's compensated rather nicely for his time.
I think he made around $80,000 last year.

It truly defeats the purpose of getting a local job in the first place.
Now, I know you'll make a fortune with all the overtime, but what good is being able to afford a nice house and car if you're never around to enjoy any of it? Your kidding, right?

If you want an 8-5 job you are in the wrong line of work.
Driving local i have started any where fron 11Pm to 5Am and went to any where from 12Pm to 7PM depening on the job. Not a problem ay more since i don't drive any more, i work for the city with all kinds of bennies.

Well, I'm like Snowman, I run at night. I run linehaul for SYSCO. I usually start around 3:30-4:00 in the afternoon. On an average, I get back home anywhere from Midnight to 1:00-1:30. To some, it would be a nightmare, but I love my hours..
On the other hand, our guys that work days, delivering, they get cranked up around 4:30-5:00 every morning. Bleh :P They usually get done with their routes around lunch time. Not bad. I delivered for almost 2 years before I started running linehaul. I much rather run at night, than get up at 3:30. :P I wouldnt think that any company that works from 8:00 to 5:00 would pay too much.

Only way to be guaranteed an 8-5 driving job is doing delivery for a local appliance store or lumber yard. You'll certainly get your 40 hours, but overtime may or may not be available. Pay isn't very good. If you have a mortgage/rent, bills, debts, kids... you won't make it.

This is why you want to get your foot in the door of a good-paying LTL company and build your seniority.
For P&D, we bid on start times based on our seniority. Right now, I've got a 0800 start time and I usually work until about 1700-1800 every day M-F depending on freight levels. There's other guys who come in at 0700, 0800, 0900, 0930, 1000, 1100, and even 1200. For next year's bidding, the TM is going to offer some 4 ten-hour day schedules. So you would work 10 hour days Mon-Thurs and have Fri, Sat, and Sun off one week and then alternate Sat, Sun, and Mon the next and vice-versa. They do this to control overtime, so you would only get 40 hours per week. But since top-rate is $22.00/hr, that's still a good paycheck. About $48,000/year getting a 3-day weekend every week and home every nite. There's guys working OTR making LESS than that doing 70+ hours per week, sleeping in a truck, and working weekends. That's why OTR is such a rip-off. There's also opportunites to run weekend line-haul if you want to make some extra $$$$. Every Friday, you sign your name up on a sheet in the dispatch office and they will call you by seniority and available hours if they need you. The runs are about 450 miles round trip and pay about $250.00 with mileage + drop/hook pay. Do one of those every Saturday and that's an extra $12,000 per year in your pocket.

when i run a honey dipper after 2years i got on a tractor trailer and did 3 loads out of the same place everyday. 530am intill 300pm everyday. But i had to run a stright truck for 2 years frist and them hours where 630am intill god only knows sometimes 2pm or 8pm. Oh yeah and alot of saturday work and meaning on-call for the weekends. I got paid by the hr. so the 9.5hr days where nice cuz it gave me alittle bit of overtime every week.
