I spent some time with Conway and do you realize that getting linehaul is about every LTL guy's end goal. Linehaul is where you make the money with Conway. What FAC do you run? Sometimes you have to just figure out which run is better and how to work system at each FAC. Don't quit Conway. Your going to make half of what your making now and do twice the work. Spend some time talking to the older guys you work with, I'm sure they can give you some good input. 3 more years you will be close to top pay, then after that you can hold the gravy bids.

Irrational?..... maybe, but i would more like "open". but to each there own. I DONT want to do OTR for my life career, and if i did, who cares, its MY life. But, in todays world, a college degree can open up many doors for an individual, which is why i went back to school. i dint need anyone to agree with me.

Hasn't anyone ever just wanted to try something out, because you've wanted to since you were a kid? thats all this OTR thing is, i wanted to since i was younger, and now i have a chance for a while...

Thanks for you reply.

Remember going OTR isn't your only other choice.
I understand that OTR isnt may not be as glamorous. and i've been searching for another local gig, but since i am only 22 (most require 23) my options are limited, i, really dont like LTL anymore, any local gig that i want, the age is 23...

I dont need the grass to be greener for OTR...... I am taking college classes and working towards my degree, So i will MAKE my grass greener, when i complete my schooling.

My plan was to try OTR for 6 months, then in april, i'll be 23, so if i really hate it, i will get another local gig, because i can be hired by mostly anyone.
Not if you change your jobs more frequently than your under wear!
Well, this is a very true statement. But one of the companies i plan on possibly working for after college want some OTR experience (either driving or managing) in addition to my degree. So i think it will help me build my resume.

Thanks for you reply.

This is the answer i was looking for, I figured it would be tough..... but i am doing the near impossible now, I get home from work at about 8:30am then i go in around 7:00PM...... in that i i got to sleep, eat, commute, & do school work.... (one of those is going to suffer), right now its the sleep, i dont sleep well in the day, never have.

I thought about an adult program, i couldn't find a suitable job in time for school... I am only taking a few classes this semester so it "might" be possible.

thanks for your reply.

I quit without a job to go to because I couldnt take the F/M and dispatcher BS anymore at Shaffer. And the company I drive linehaul for now called me over ONE day for an interview, ONE day for driving test another day drug test another day for this and that. It took 4 weeks till I could start and if I would have been OTR I wouldnt have been home to go to the appointments and other job interviews I went to. Just my experience.
Very interesting experience. i agree with you....

Where online are you taking the classes for this degree? I want one. (seriously).
Not to really use it or anything, but just to have it for a nice wall decoration.
Some info would be appreciated.

I dont really want to get into the whole conway good or bad thing, but you asked.

I can tell you worked for conway, mainly because the first thing you said was "money", you sound like everyone else during l/h. Isnt it funny that in all my posts i never really talked about money. I focused more on my schooling..... I have money.... I dont mine the FAC i got to (XTM, XDP, XML) mostly xtm. Its very hard to work any "system" when your the only guy there and you have to cram you freight into 2 trailers. (xtm) I already know i'll make less money OTR than right now, I dont care.

I cant see myself working at a place i dont get along with, i've tried, but there is NO flexibility in schedules for school.... If you liked conway so much, then why did you leave?

If i spent another 4.5 years to reach top pay, what would i be doing? the same thing, working the hot/cold dock, driving crappy trucks, working under poor management. Uh... not for me. Yes, eventually i can get a longer run, but, its boring.

Thanks for you reply.

Aww.... you a very wise man for wanting to better your future.

Well, i am taking the classes through the University of Wisconsin system, since i live in WI. So thats what i would look at for you... just try to talk to the local colleges and see what courses they offer for you interests....

I was looking at the private schools, live University of Phoenix, but i heard many bad things about them, Plus there over priced.

Good luck with school

You're going to do all those things and more everyday OTR. Drive for 11 hours and maybe work your full 14 a day. At the end of your day you'll have to squeeze in showers, laundry and meals. If you honestly think you're going to be able to do much homework or studying, you're fooling yourself.
