If your marriage is already in trouble, then this business won't help. My wife and I have been married for more than 27 years. We knew each other for several years prior to that time. We have actually been together for about 31 years. I traveled most of the time and we are still together. It is easy to blame a business or job on the breakup of a marriage. In reality, I think most marriages break up due to poor communication. This business has been good form me and my family. It has it's down side, but I think the positives out weigh the negatives.

That is great, bransontripper. It can make things very difficult when your spouse isn't behind you. Driving a truck for 10 hours a day, dealing with traffic, shippers and all the frustrations of this job can be stressful without having additional concerns at home. For me, it relaxes me to get out on the road and drive. The nice part of this job is that your spouse can sometimes go with you, depending on the company and your experience. I have known of some who regularly take their spouse on runs. My wife really enjoys being on the road when she can. Some couple's find traveling and living so close together much more stressful than being apart. We do pretty well whether she travels with me or stays at home. We have found ways in which to make it work.

I can't for the life of me figure out why there are so many drivers that gripe about trucking. They chose this profession, they aren't being forced to stay.I personally love trucking. My wife of 22 years is supportive, she even goes with me at times. It pays the bills and puts food on the table. It is what you make of it.I guess it is like any profession, there are a certain percentage that will never be happy.I for one are happy with trucking and the company I drive for.

If I were as unhappy in this business as some profess, I would do something else. Life is too short to work at a job you don't like. This profession is what it is. It has given many of us a good livelihood. If those who were so unhappy would stop the whining and look for another profession or found some positives about the one they are in, they would be a lot happier.

I think the company and type of work have a lot to do with it.

Forced dispatch can be hell. I've never worked for a forced dispatch company.

A company that takes advantage of their owner/operators wouldn't be good for the marriage too. Wanting to stay home for an extra day, meanwhile the bank is asking for their money, not good!

Find a GOOD job, maybe even local, and you both will be happy.

Personally, I put on very few miles compared to other drivers. She also comes with me about 80% of the time. I find it works very well!

I would not work for a forced dispatch carrier as an owner operator. If I ran by the mile and were paid for all miles run, it really would not make much difference where you ran as long as you get the miles. On the other hand, if you work percentage, you want to maximize profits by taking loads which pay the most while going to areas where operating costs are comparably low and there is plenty of freight. I think having your spouse with you can be a plus for many situations.

Some can handle forced dispatch some cant. It makes no difference to me. I'll get paid whether I'm "forced" to go on a run, or have a choice.
