I was just hired on with a company that asked had I EVER had a license suspended. I told them I had about 20 years ago in another state, his response was " we only check 7 years" but I think the honesty was respected. As others said, don't lie on your application but don't volunteer anything negative if they don't ask.

The notion that companies only check back 3 to 5 years is nothing but an oft repeated MYTH!! It's been repeated so many times that people just assume it to be true. The truth is that they check back to the day that you received your driver's license, OR the first day that you entered the 6th grade.**** ****(Since this IS the truck driving profession, I should perhaps qualify that phrase by saying "Which ever occurred first!!" ) So, you received a ticket back in 1969?? Sorry, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are most likely screwed for life, as far as ever being able to drive a big truck is concerned!! I'm suprised that they even let you drive a CAR!!.....if there were ANY justice in America, guys like you would be locked away, with the key to your cell door long thrown away and forgotton. I one knew an Ex-Catholic Nun who doulbe parked the convent station wagon on Holy Days of Obligation........thought she was real cool, untill the law caught up with her!! Though it may seem like enough time has passed in your mind, the fact is that 1969 was only 38 years ago......HARDLY enough time for a ticket to drop off of your record!! It will cost some money to do this, but I would HIGHLY reccommend that you contact an attorney, and see if you can petition your state's board of pardon and paroles, and hope that maybe they will give you a break and ask your state's governor for a pardon. I don't know why I am even suggesting that.....dangerous people like you should be permitted to get around on nothing more than a pogo stick. Really, you need to forget about a driving career, and focus your attention upon doing other things; perhaps you might be able to get an apprenticeship in a "Will Work For Food" business; that MIGHT not be a bad ides, since you can be your own boss, set your own hours, make FAR more than you will ever make driving a big tru ............ ........never mind, I gotta go find a Marks Alot and some cardboard!! BOL2U, and GOD HELP US ALL!!

On a slightly different issue, in the US, how many years of driving experience is required in order to apply for a CDL A license ? For eg, here in Alberta, it's 2 years before one can apply for a CDL learner's permit, and in British Columbia, it's 3 years ( presumably, as driving conditions are more challenging there due to the mountainous terrain ).
