OK I started out with a company called Florida Rock and Tank Lines right out of school. The company head quarters is in Jacksonville. I drive out of the Savannah Terminal and haul lube oil. They willl not allow me to haul HAZMAT for 1 year. After I have one year I plan on becoming a night time Gas drive for them. They paid me $600 a week training pay. After you come out of training they take it easy on you and compensate you pay by $500 the first week, 400, the second and so on. I know we have terminals in Alabama but not sure. I hope this helps.

Like Cyanide.... I drove for CTL as well. I was a system driver out of the Mulberry, FL terminal...the home office.

If you are going to start out with a tanker company that will train you.... CTL is an ok place to start. Their pay, like Cyanide says, isn't the highest, but the accessorial pay makes up for it... So, if you want to start pulling a tank and don't have the OTR experience to get on with anyone else, then CTL would be a good choice.... and considering where you live....their right down the street. Our terminal is up in Axis....a little farther away, say 15 minutes 8)

Overall, I found CTL to be OK....but when I was with them there was some internal politics going on and personnel changes, etc....but generally I made decent money....and I got my initial training in "tanker yanking".

Overall...its not too bad of a company. A good place to start.

Groendyke has a terminal in Phoenix. Whether or not they will train a new inexperienced driver....I don't know. Their website says you need one year of experience....but maybe they are flexible.

Other than them, I know of no others.

I hear that ctl pays like $50.00 a day. Is that right? I would like to stay close to home I was thinking about pulling tanker or flats..But I'll do what I need to to get in to this career.

Cyanide,

I see that you have been out to California before... Does your company or a company you might recommend hire out of the Southern California area? I live about 30-40 miles southeast of Fontana, Rialto, Ontario area.
I have just graduated (160hr course) with my class A and all endorsements I'm waiting for my background to come back for the Haz-mat which should not be to much longer.

thanks,

larz0142... You and anyone else who finds this info helpful all are quite welcome! I'm glad someone reads all this stuff and gets some use out of it, though the rest of it is in my big tanker thread.

dewercs2... As for CA, yeah, I got out there religiously when I ran "easy" food-grade. Honestly though, aside from Schneider I don't know of any companies out there that would hire you right out of school for tanks. Now someone else may know more about the West coast side of things for tanks, but I know the majority of the main players are based primarily in the Midwest or East. Groendyke has a very strong presence in the central part of the country, and may be one worth looking into, but I'm not sure they're going to be flexible on their one-year experience requirement for a brand new driver. Good luck with your endeavors!
