Cat vs Cummins

You won't have to worry because soon there will be no more Cat highway engines. They are unwilling to come up to spec on emissions, (did I spell that right?) and will no longer make highway motors. (This is something I heard and cannot say if it is entirely true.)

The highest horsepower ratings for big truck engines is now 625 HP. Wonder if we'll ever see 700 HP? 8)

i was talking to a driver 3 days ago telling him what mpg i get & another driver cussed & told me i was lying. i have no reason to lie. fill up at whiteland in. unload in grand rapids mi. deadhead 50 mi to white cloud mi & back to whiteland in. carry 45,ooo lbs skid coils up & 42,000lbs brick back. 58-60 mph all way thru in & 55 mph thru mi. i get 8.6- 8.9 mpg. doing same run at how i like to run 68-72 mph i get 6.0 or thereabouts. i do a lot of locall stuff lately & i get 6.8 7.5. but that's keeping it at 58 no more usually & i always shut truck off when load or unload ,fuel e.t.c. i also dont use a/c. i'm just a penny pincher. but generally speaking 5.7-6.5 is normal if i do the speed limit or more & do the hills e.t.c.

Sounds good! I'd have a 550 kitty, 13-speed (the fewer gears I have to mess with the better I like it), 24.5 rubber on aluminum wheels, 70" Unibilt sleeper, platinum interior, duel bunks, factory invertor, refrigerator, Thermo King apu, and shore power. Maroon in color with gray leather. 8)

I slip seat and we have an all International fleet. Most have Cats, but there are a few in the fleet with Cummins. I don't know that they are the exact same specs, but I know that they are close and I can tell you, I dread it when I come in and find out that I'm in one of the trucks with a Cummins. All of our trucks are 03's (we're getting a whole new fleet this year) with anywhere from 480K - 510K miles on them. The Cats win hands down, it's not even close. The Cummins do hang pretty close on fuel mileage at the end of each trip, but they are flat dogs when compared to the Cats. (Ha, dogs & cats...) ....sorry, I'm easily amused... Honest to goodness, I thought either the squirrel was either gonna fall off of his cage wheel or the rubber band was gonna snap when I was trying pull a small hill with a Cummins the other day...
That's my only basis for comparing the two, but I thought it should be a pretty good one. If our fleet is any fair method of comparison, give me a CAT any day.

Wait a minute, you said that the ISX gets worse fuel mileage then the cats?
Damn, maybe pigs will start flying too! I've talked to a few folks "in the know" and they all claim that the ACERT c15 cat has a higher cost both in fuel mileage and overall repairs VS the ISX. We're not talkin truck drivers that have driven 2-3 trucks but fleet managers. Honestly, I've never heard someone claim that the cats are better for fuel milage. Pulling power yes, everyone knows the cats have power.

Don't know if you were referring to me on the fuel mileage statement, but what I'm saying is they pretty much run neck and neck on fuel mileage in our trucks. That's not 2-3 trucks, that's a fleet of over 100 trucks. Aprrox. 80 of them are CAT's and the other 20 some are Cummins.
Did the same exact run today with a CAT that I did with a Cummins on Friday. Truthfully I probably encountered more traffic today than I did Friday. Had a 45 minute backup due to a wreck today and sat in another backup for 30 minutes on Friday. Both loads had 31,XXX lbs of freight and I deadheaded back in both times. There might have been a couple hundred pounds of difference, but not much. My mpg at the end of the Cummins' trip was 6.8. Today with the CAT it was 7.1. Not 100% scientific, there could have been other variables, but both engines are normally in the same range on mpg after each trip in our trucks. With mpg being nearly equal and the obvious difference in power in favor of the CAT, give me the CAT...
