Default Down Time

I just finished my 6 weeks training at Swift. We were stuck at the beginning at Gary for 2 days trying to get the truck serviced and 2 new steer tires. Two weeks later we spent 2 1/2 days in Sparks. We took a 2 stop load to Portland jut to get out of Sparks. Part ot the deal was the promise of a good load. We got it too. Portland OR to Jacksonville Fl. Nice long haul.
The last week my mentor wanted to get some hometime before his vacation started. We both live in central Illinois and they wanted us to grab a load for Columbus, OH. They said they would TRY to get a load back home. Well, we dropped the trailer at the consignee and bobtailed home.
I have a couple of days home and Monday I go finish up at Gary and hopefully pick up a truck in Manteno, Il.

well i see other drivers had the same problem i had tires not turning and sitting sitting and sitting plus home time yep going the other way you live thats why i had to leave i agree ok place to go to get cdl and some time behind the wheel like i said some time lol because trk wont run long enough to get alot of time btw or short miles to run. but if u have no other choice go there get threw the pain and get some where you will be happy and feel good about being a professwional driver. and after my short time with swifty im ready to go with a better co and hopefully better people. i have to add i too like fatman wanted to stick it out a yr, then that droped to 6 months , and finally had to leave after only 4 months. guess i will just have to make payments to them and i know for a fact they will at least take 80 a month he.. with the miles i was getting thats better than staying with them and paying what they were taking out of ck anyway. good luck to all that have to go with them just do your time and move on

Default Swift?

Well, I started with Swift and I just finished training. Six weeks on the road and everything is ok with me. Don't let the guys who never worked here let you influence your thinking. All training companies have thier shortcomings.
I didn't go through a school. I got my license working for a farmer and Swift was the only company that would hire me. Now that I have some over the road experience I know that I can do this job.
Don't let all the negativity from the would be drivers influence your thinking.

Default Swift

I just got done with my 6 weeks training at swift. My mentor was a hard charger as far as getting loads and not sitting around. I wouldn't recommend running with an o/o because too many of them use the trainee for miles to make their truck payment. If your mentor is a company driver he is there to train.
I spent the last 30 days out on the road and I caught a cold. The last 3 weeks have been a bear but my mentor was going on vacation and I wanted to get this over with.
Don't believe everything on this board from people who know nothing about Swift except what they hear on the CB. All companies have their shortcomings. None are perfect. I went with Swift because I didn't go through a school. I got my CDL driving a grain truck for a farmer.
I now have experience driving in mountains and snow and other conditions. Now I have to go and finish up with a log class, final road test, and then get assigned a truck.
Swift gave me a chance....the rest is up to me.

I worked for Swift out of the Oklahoma City terminal for almost two years and thought I was treated fine. They're an awful big company, so you're basically just a number, but I was always treated with respect.

Any problems I encountered with Swift would have been there with any OTR company. I always rolled 2,500-plus miles per week.

Swift has a lot of drivers who have worked for them a long time, so they must be doing something right.

I went to work for Swift to get enough experience to find a local job, and that's exactly what I did. I yank tanks and haul fuel these daze. I'll always be grateful to Swift for letting me get my foot in the door.

BTW, if you ever need mechanical work on a Swift truck at Fontana, go to the Central Freight yard at Mira Loma. Swift has a much better shop there.

Good luck to ya. Let the Billy Bigrigs talk BS over the CB, keep yer mouth shut and drive, and you'll do just fine. It never ceases to amaze me all the misinformation I read about Swift.
