1) When stopped at a stop light waiting to turn left, do you have to stay behind the white line? if so do you have to have it in view? And if the light turns orange, can you still go or do you just have to wait until the next opening during a green?

You should! If the light changes and you are out in the intersection, you may get an "auto fail" for "impeding traffic". One of the rules that we as examiners were required to consider is if the person made another vehicle take action (speed up, slow down, change lanes etc) then the person is "guilty" of impeding traffic".

You said I should. I should what exactly? Stay behind the white line until the light changes? I'm not understanding your answer.

As infront of the truck over the hood, no you just can't be sitting on top of it. And if the light turns orange, can you still go or do you just have to wait until the next opening during a green? That would depend where you are at when the light turns amber, if you have enough time to stop behind the line then you best be stopping, and waiting.

Okay.. I'm getting this better now.. I see my problem was with the wording of the original question.. here it goes again

While stopped at a TRAFFIC LIGHT while the light is green and i'm waiting to turn left, could I be in the intersection and make my turn when it is clear? (either a large enough gap or when traffic flowing in the opposite direction stops for the amber)

OR must I be behind the white line during a green waiting to turn left and NOT in the intersection. If this is the case, can I go when the light turns to amber and traffic in the opposite direction stops? OR must I wait for the next green and a gap in traffic.

I'll get this eventually! I promise!

Ok, I understand a little better now. If it's green and I'm waiting, I'm not going to be behind that line. I'm going to be partially into the intersection, blocking the nearest lane. I do this so that if that light turns yellow, or even red I have to go to get out of the intersection. I do it this way so I don't wait at a light forever for traffic that doesn't seem to let up.

Like Fozzy said, "when in a turn both hands on the wheel and the shifter is off limits. When I took my test everytime I shifted while in a turn the examiner deducted a point. I came two intersections from failing. Also, My pretrip wasn't that involved. Know what you are supposed to look for but don't expect to use it all. Mine made sure lights and horn worked and we were off. Never even opened the hood.Good luck.
