So now the $64,000 question is how are you logging this? Technically, the book says that the whole time you are waiting on loads and available for work (minus DOT breaks etc), you must be on LINE 4, ON DUTY NOT DRIVING. But how are you REALLY gonna log it? Problably a mixture of Lines 1+2.
Assuming you have that magical statement endorsing that you do not have responsibility for the tractor/trailer during breaks -- If you have completed the load and now you can freely take a break -- it is line 1. If you are in the sleeper it is line 2. I am pretty confident that GolfHobo or somebody else will quote the FMCSA's [/quote]

This is exactly why I warn people to stay away from OTR - especially the big McMega carriers like Swift. You should be paid for each and every one of those hours that you're sitting around waiting on loads. And anything after 8/40 hours should be overtime. How many people do you know that would show up over the weekend at their day job for no pay? Nobody I can think of. That's why OTR is such a blatant ripoff.

But by sitting around for free and burying all those unpaid hours in the logbook, drivers allow carriers/shippers/receivers to be inefficient. If you went on the clock as soon as you sent in that empty call in or when you checked into a customer, you can bet your bottom dollar that you wouldn't be sitting for very long. That's why Wallyworld drivers are almost all drop-n-hook. Because they rate delay-pay, no way is Wal-Mart gonna pay those guys to sit around docks, truckstops, rest areas, etc for very long. Same deal with the LTL carriers. I for one agree with you. But dont forget this is mostly an OTR website. Not only that, but the majority of posters are from people with little to no experience. Fact is OTR is the fastest and easiest way into trucking and everyone has to start somewhere. Sounds like you did? I know I did, well, regional and home weekends. I knew all along I couldnt handle weeks on end in a truck. Anyway, did you ever think our jobs dont appeal to everyone? I drive a crappy truck which I hate. I dont spend much time on the dock but I dont like that either. I have to wear a uniform, no facial hair allowed. Call in boards, lay offs, etc. But I like weekends off, sleeping in my own bed, good pay and bennies. In a perfect world I could take what I like about OTR and combine that with what I like about LTL and make my own job. But I cant so I have to choose whats importatnt to me. Other people have different interests. Besides the lack of experience or interest others live in remote areas where there is no LTL terminal. Others are making 60k with a wife and three kids (and maybe an ex-wife lol) so there's no way they could survive on a call in board or until they get some seniority. Others dont like authority and got into this to get away from bosses and politics. I know there are some well paid OTR guys who have a good gig and love their life the way it is. OTR is a lifestyle LTL is a job. None of us has the right to look down on the other. In the end were all just"dumb truck drivers" trying to make a living. (joking) None of us are rich and famous if you get my drift. Your union gig could be gone tomorrow if your company goes belly up, Remember CF? They thought they had a job for life. All I'm saying is I work at UPSF and I agree with and you still get on my nerves, I can only imagine how the OTR guys feel. Sorry if this offends you I just thought maybe you could lighten up a little. You really come off as kind of concieted, hopefully its not intentional. You know alot about trucking and I think people would like to hear it without being reminded what a good job you have all the time.
