As it was said, it depends on the company. When I started out, I was running all 48, but only drove the 11 western. In my opinion, it takes a different breed of driver to run western 11 than 48 states.

If you look at the rest of the US, they don't have nearly the amount of passes with elevation to match (again my own opinion). I love running the 11 western, I enjoy the challenge, and it is closer to home

Same here one of my first runs solo was Avon NY to Stockton CA southern route via El Paso TX load could not get over 5500 feet or the cool whip would explode out of the containers and make one hell of a mess. Made for one nice check. So forget about the fact that your instructor stated you will not see the western 11 states companies look at who is there for the load has the hours and do not care about your experiance level.

I really want to run the western states and have no desire to go east. south would be OK but would rather stay west. is this going to be a problem?
your instructor is full of you know what .
No, not exactly full of anything. His statement may have been "out of context". A number of companies in the mid-west tend to run new drivers "between the hills" for the first few months. Get you used to driving and maneuvering the truck and trailer before they put you on the "DOWN-HILL SLIDE". Once you get some experience behind you, you're in for the rest of it.

I run the mountains here in the west every week... I would be bored running the Plains.
