18 speed transmission
hello again everyone, i have a question for you guys and i need a little help. I have been hired by a local outfit and am set to do a drive test tomorrow and i am a little nervous about there transmissions, they run all there trucks with 18 speed trannies.
I told the owner i have only drove 10 speeds, he told me not to worry. Well im a bit nervous and was hoping for some advise from the forum once again, Thanks

An 18 speed is just a 9 speed with another splitter button on the left side of the shift knob that is used to give a hi & low split to each gear, much like using a 2 speed rear axle.
Just leave that button on the left side of the knob alone & shift it like a 9 speed if you're not sure of yourself.
Then when you get comfortable with that, teach yourself how to split each gear when necessary.
It's easy with a little practice.

An 18 reminds me of the old 5-speed-2-speed transmissions. Kinda like a,Super 10. Sorta. :P

The 18 is just like a 13 except u split the low side on an 18 right? I'm sure once u get a lil seat time u will be as comfortable as u are with the 10!

1. Don't panic. You told them you have no time in an 18. The truth is always the safe way to go.
2. Leave that little Grey button on the left side pulled back in gears 1-4
3. After your range shift goto 5th.(same hole as 1)
4. When you are ready to shift into 5H push the Grey button forward, Release the throttle, clutch (halfway, don't hit the clutch break) and you are in 5H.
5. When you are ready to goto 6L, move the Grey switch back then double clutch shift into 6. The transmission will not shift into the L until you are engaged in 6.
6. No matter how you drove your 10, make sure you double clutch all shifts in a driver test. Might matter to the owner, might not. But nobody will get mad at you for not floating.
This is identical to shifting a 13 and I have seldom found a need to split 1-4 unless really heavy.
Now once you get the job (think positive) you will love that 18 and never want anything else. After you get the job come back here and I will teach you all the bad tricks you should never do with an 18 :lol:

your supposed to use the clutch? all I use it for is first and reverse :lol:
an 18 speed is just like shifting a plain jane 9 in a dump truck, forgot about using low unless your damn heavy and shift it like an 8 speed with an extra hi/lo switch.
I love my 18 speed, its chock full of "tweener" gears :wink:

Yeap, you are supposed to. Not that I am any different than you. But our young friend taking his driving test with a company....wear that clutch out :lol:
