Default Dump Trailer Rookie .....

Ok so I decided instead of that starter company, I would beat the streets and try to find a local company to drive for since I have recieved my CDL's before xmas.
And guess what I found a comp to take me on at a lower rate of pay Of course because of being a rookie, I'll live thru that "Not a Rookie Forever.."

Anyway It is for a company that runs southeast which I know well, What has the upholstry starting to tighten on my seat is that I'll be hauling with a dump trailer and Besides running fire trucks with ladders and being around little dump trucks. I would really appreciate any tips on dump trailers. Have already heard some, level stable ground, no flat tires on rear axle, and so on but would appreciate any other tips I can get..

Start on Tuesday,

Be safe out there...... :?:

One thing I learned with an end dump was that the trailer doesn't have to go all the way up for it to be effective. I preferred to not raise it any higher than necessary and avoid the risk of it tipping.

Also, I would always use the Johnny Bar to lock the trailer wheels. Then when you hit the PTO to raise the trailer, it will drag the tractor back. Once I got the trailer as high as I wanted, I'd pull forward a bit, hit the brakes a few times and shake loose everything. Keep pulling forward until you see daylight behind the trailer go ahead and start lowering the trailer back down. While it's lowering you can hit the Johnny Bar again and hop out and make sure there's nothing left in the dump bed. BOL!

Thanks for the tip nrvswreck I guess there aren't many dump trailer users on this site.

I'm suppose to go to the yard today and play with one some get the feel of it so I'm hoping it will rest my worries about tipping one, or not lol...

rubber side down shiny side up, right!

I have pulled dumps on and off for over 20 years, the best advice I can give you is that if it does start to tip over DO NOT let it down, get it up as fast as you can and get the load out, once the load is mostly out the trailer will stabilize. I have seen many turnovers and on every one of them the driver tried to let it down when he saw it leaning. Also, if you think it's not safe to dump, DONT let the cust talk you into dumping there, call your boss and explain it to him, if he wants you to dump in an unsafe situation, you dont wnat to work for him anyway.

I pulled dumps for a year and one thing I learned is if you're pulling a frame type dump make sure it's level where you dump plus where you pull up. I had a few scary moments when I pulled the tires out of the pile and all of a sudden the box is swaying all over because I pulled into a pothole. I never had anything really bad happen but saw enough happen to other guys to get me out of that racket. This was with my own truck and all I could do think about how much this was going to cost if it went over. I still kind of miss it sometimes though all of our customers were really easy to deal with. Not like the steel mills guys I deal with now
