My friend, DD60 hit the nail smack-dab on the head!!

You are the victim of disorganized thinking.

Starting out, fear is not only normal, it can be one of your greatest assets.
Fear is what will force you to Get Out And Look!! (G.O.A.L.) Fear is what will force you to do a pull-up, rather than try to back yourself out of trouble.

Throughout your driving career, fear is not what will get you into trouble.

COMPLACENCY is what will get you into trouble in a hurry.

Fear is not your enemy. Learn to embrace it, and use it as an asset!!
Yes as long as it isn't white nuckle fear, that is the bad stuff.

I think all new drivers should start out shunting trailers in the yard before they go out on the road, because it is the best experience to learn backing up, you really have to practice to get good at it

this is where I had an advantage, I stared out as a kid shunting trailers, I did that for several years before I was even old enough to drive a truck, I learned without power steering as well

G.O.A.L Get Out And Look.. Take as much time as you need, its not a time test. I'd rather waste time getting out than backing into one of those nice expensive trucks

I know what people can be like when someone is backing up in a truck stop and they are taking a long time, guys will get on the radio and make comments, especially if other trucks are waiting to get around you

don't let anyone make you in a hurry, get out and look as many times as you need to, it is much better than hitting someones truck, they probably forget that they were "rookies" once too

I always help out if I see someone in that situation
