Default Load Assignment - Leased...48 states... Regional

I read in a thread that a company would assign a load to a driver in a leased truck before giving it to a company driver. I have no problem with this and understand a company supporting their leased vehicles.

Is this the norm in the industry?

If a regional driver and 48 states driver were available for a load in the same area, who do you think would get the load if the load was to be delivered in the region?

Does this vary by company and/or do companies have Standard Operating Procedures or protocols dealing with load assignments?

If I was a 48 states driver, could I expect to spend less time waiting for a load to anywhere than a regional driver?

/Steve

25 views in one hour, but no comments. How does someone find out how dispatch really works?

There is no simple answer to your question. Your relationship with your dispatcher will play a key role in what loads you get or don't get. Always deliver on time and don't turn down too many loads, and you should do OK.

Some companies will give priority to trainer/trainee teams, others may give a load to a rookie making .30 cpm verses a veteran making .40 cpm, others may give the load to the veteran because he knows it will get there on time.

This is a good reason to lease to a carrier who does not have company trucks. A good carrier should do first in and first out as far as dispatching is concerned, whether the trucks are company, leased or owner operator. There will always be a tendency to put the best loads on your own trucks if you are the carrier. If I were to go back to leasing to a carrier, I would go with one that only had owner operators.

Our company generally dispatches in this order:
Owner Ops
Teams
Solos

Many of the solos where we work are crying foul right now and I can't say I blame them. We walk into a terminal that has 60-80 drivers that have been there 2 days waiting for a load and we are dispatched out of there in 3 hours. The loads we are given are not necessarily team either, however it is company policy though that team trucks must get 5000+ miles a week. Each company is different, it is just a matter of finding the good one for you.

It has been my experience that if preference is given to loads it is done either by profitability or to company trucks first.

The fair way to do it though is first in/first out dispatch.

Most companies with both company drivers and lease drivers will give loads to the lease operator first. Just seems to be the norm in the industry.
