The other night I was involved in a minor accident when a driver (auto) struck my tow truck. No visible damage was done to my truck, but some cosmetic damage resulted on the other vehicle; no one was hurt. Although the appropriate authorites attended to the scene, no accident report was filed.

The night of this incident was my last with this company because I was "pre-hired" with a top trucking company. My mvr is cleaned (at least up to this point). I've never been involved in any such incident. Now, I'm worried that this might doom my employment prospect with this trucking company.

Could anyone offer advice on how I might present this matter to this (trucking) company? Thank you.

 

If no accident report was filed it should not appear on your MVR. I would make sure about the accident report not being filed. If the police came out I would think an accident report was filed. You might mention it to your company, just in case. It should not cause a problem if it wasn't your fault. Carriers usually pull an MVR on all their drivers annually. You want to make sure that nothing appears out of the blue later.

 

Thx, GMAN: Indeed it wasn't my fault. The other party involved said that he didn't wish to file a report at the scene. seeing that there was no apparent damage to my truck, i agreed. however, he later contacted my company, pressing a ludicrous claim that i hit him! well, because i already informed my company about the events, he got no satisfaction.

so, now this guy phones me telling he plans to file a police report! :shock:

i don't get this. could this "self-reporting" -- after the fact -- affect my mvr?

 

Well hopefully you have learned on vital thing. ALWAYS, ALWAYS get a police report/accident report. This helps to protect you and helps keep these idiots from coming back later and saying everything was your fault.

It could if the police investigate it and determine it was your fault and issue you a ticket.

What I would do, as far as your new employer is concerned, is tell them you were involved in an incident that was not your fault and non-preventable and give them the bare facts of what happened. It will look a lot better from you than finding out from another source.

You stated that appropriate authorities attended. Does that mean that police came out to investigate? If they did, they should have made some sort of report. You may want to do some follow up with the local police. If this guy does file a report, it could come back on you. Did this happen on private property? That can make a difference. You are required to file an accident report in some states within a specified time frame. If you fail to file your license could be suspended. If a police report hasn't been filed, then you may not have anything to worry about.
