Default AirBrakeEndorsementRequired?

Ok, I'm having a little difficulty finding where it specifies that you MUST have an Air Brake Endorsement to operate air brake equiped bobtail truck.

Does anyone know if you drive a straight truck(bobtail) with air brakes, is it required you have at least a CDL , Class B, and Air Brake endorsement?

And where can these answers be found? It's for driving a truck in California btw.

thanks all for answering.

If it is within the borders of California only, then the FMCSA rules do not apply.

It's my understanding that if the vehicle you are operating is 26,000 gvw or more (requiring at least a B License) you MUST have an air brake endorsement to run that vehicle, period - if the truck is under 26,000 gvw, that may or may not be a diffent story, be safe rather than sorry...Contact the CHP & ask to speak with one of the motor carrier officers.

IMO the airbrakes endorsment was really easy... took me $5 to get it (i needed to b/c of Class A CDL) and it's a wiff to do... (in NY that is) I'd just get it done "in case" there is a need for it...

All the new rental trucks like Ryder and such have air brakes now and no special license required.

Don't know how it is where you are..............but, our company just bough a 2007-town delivery straight truck.........my boss asked me to run it a couple of days to give my opinion............I said I love it, except I can't understand why he didn't have "Air-brakes" installed instead of "Mechanical-brakes"...........he stated, that in the state of Florida, if a vehicle has "Air-brakes", a Class-A CDL is required.

I have a class B, and i had to get an air brakes endorsement. I assumed it was a federal requirement that if you operated a vehicle that required a class B or A and had air brakes, you needed the endorsement.

The TEXAS CDL handbook states that you need to study and test on air brakes if your vehicle is equipped with air brakes period.

in fact, under section 5, Air Brakes, it even states......."THIS PART IS FOR DRIVERS WHO DRIVE VEHICLES WITH AIR BRAKES"
