One of the many questions I had for my classroom instructor was just what to wear for a trucking job interview. Having been mostly in financial/sales/and skilled trades in the past my rule of thumb was that you did just that-suit and tie. More out of respect for the interviewer than anything else, but my instructor advised against it, saying nice jeans, polo shirt would suffice. What IS the best policy anyways? Much Thanks.

Most trucking jobs that you will find if they even have a interview it will be over the phone. The one exception to this might be if it is a local company. Now, if they do have a face to face interview it will not be to formal. I have gone to trucking interviews in a pair of jeans and a decent shirt and I got the job if I wanted. It just depends on the company. Just look at the people in the office when you apply and see how they are dressed. That should give you a good indicator on how to dress. That is just my opinion. BOL

(Just could not resist that) I've never really worried about my clothes other than them being clean, no obvious holes, just something I can be comfortable in. What you'd wear going out to a picnic would work just fine. I've even seen guys with fishing flys on their hats going for an interview and got the job. You see guys out here that haven't shaved in 5 years or longer, haven't had a hair-cut even longer than that, and they're driving. Beard long enough that even if they wore a tie, you'd never see it. They're driving, so they got the job without worrying about a "dress-code".

When taking part in an interview for ANY job a good rule to follow is: Always dress as well as the person in the company who has the job that you would like to eventually be promoted to.
There are many VPs of trucking companies that started out as truck drivers. Wouldnt hurt to dress as well as them. First impressions mean very much in the business world.
