BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - U.S. Steel cited the weak economy for a decision to lay off about 50 of the 1,410 workers at its Fairfield Works, a move that followed its decision to delay work on a new plant in west Alabama.
The job losses in metro Birmingham are part of a nationwide cutback for the Pittsburgh-based company, which is eliminating 500 jobs overall.
