Default Cameras in trucks

Noticing in my job search that this seems to be a very big hot button issue. Many companies are getting raked over the coals for installing cameras in the cab watching the driver. Anyone here who deals with this, is it much ado about nothing? Many complaints spell out its the company at fault but methinks they are upset at the wrong people, it's the insurance companies forcing this. Seems every place I look for local home every day driving jobs all have these cameras.

Snitch cams. An invasion of privacy, but man would I have fun with one of those, before I quit, to work for someone who doesn't stand over my back.
That is one of the best parts of driving OTR is your freedom. This takes that away.

Maybe there are some up sides to snitch cams, sez aye.
There would be a lot less monkey spanking, and I'm sure they would be happy aboot that, eh.

Understand both sides, just seems drivers like to rip on the cameras as the reason for getting fired.........not the fact that they are busy doing other things besides DRIVING the truck down the road safely and competently! As we have discussed this a bit before, they'd see a lot of me fingering my nose for gold!

my understanding was, the cameras only come on in an event that causes the sensor to kick in? like running into a pot hole or some other jarring event?

Dude........yep, it's gold!

GA, some do, some stay on at all times. One company I looked at had drivers complaining of being in trouble because the camera kicked on due to them having to jam on the brakes for a light change. Because they had been in trouble before for running a light.........around this area, we have trap stoplights! Others are from a car diving in and chopping them off, forcing a quick hard brake. That situation happens around here everyday all day, unavoidable even by the safest drivers out there, it will happen to them too. Or as our roads are in terrible shape, just driving down the road can cause the camera to start recording, we have bridges on 95 with terrible transitions on and off the bridges. Holes all over the place that cannot be avoided without causing a wreck....... Others stay on at all times, I'd rather have that than one which you never know if it's going to be on or not.

Get used to the cameras ladies and gents.

The FMCSA has already issued guidance that when the ELD situation is settled. The next issue will be mandatory cameras in trucks, starting with specialized (HAZMAT) along with the major carriers. It's coming for sure. Just a matter of when, not if.

Smile! You're on Candid coolie carrier Camera!

That is excellent advice Mr. Ford.

Always practice the "as if" factor.

AS IF somebody is ALWAYS watching you. You'd be surprised how many bad habits you dispense with when the 'lens' is looking at you constantly. Nothing wrong with that! Certainly a safety plus.

HOW CAN YOU ARGUE WITH THAT?

Well maybe if you were being paid on an IRS 1099, running paper logs along with cheap loads..........

Wadda I know?

i am familiar with the bad roads on I-95. i am up here in New England, and i have had runs down to the Carolinas and back. crossing the GWB will set off the cameras real quick indeed.

so if the cameras stay on say 24/7/365, i'd highly doubt that the company has someone watching all the time. maybe perhaps they spot check drivers? maybe perhaps still a sensor gets tripped and then records or captures the event till say about 2 or 3 minutes after?

in any event, i say BS to the cameras being on full time. it is beyond intrusion to the driver. a driver could (say) be listening to a radio talk show, and (say again) be perturbed with what is being said, and shouting at the radio, like i know i do at times, LOL, does that mean however, the driver is not paying attention, or is demonstrating aggressive driving?

too many variables can make the driver look like he is not paying attention, or even falling asleep. one can be nodding his head, to the music, and that can be taken as nodding off..???

all that can be said then is simply thins:

do not work for companies with cameras, and at the interview, ASK them that.
